Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently warned that software engineering and coding jobs are at risk due to rapid advancements in artificial intelligence. The cofounder of the company that developed the AI tool that wiped out billions from software stock values has predicted significant disruption in the sector within the next one to five years. Meanwhile, Alexander Embiricos, the lead of product development at OpenAI<\/a>‘s Codex, does not agree with that view.Days before Amodei\u2019s warning, Embiricos said that it’s the best time ever to be an engineer in an episode of \u201cThe Twenty Minute VC\u201d podcast with Harry Stebbings. He said, \u201cBasically, there’s actually never been a better time to be an engineer because you have incredible tooling available to you to get an incredible amount done,\u201d adding that he thinks engineers should be \u201cvery optimistic.\u201d Codex is a coding partner tool within ChatGPT for developers.Amodei recently predicted that the pace at which AI development is happening is very swift and referred to it as an \u201cAI tsunami.\u201d He noted that the pace at which AI systems have achieved human-level capabilities in various tasks has surprised many, yet the world remains unprepared to deal with the general implications of these developments. <\/p>\n

OpenAI Codex head\u2019s advice to engineers who are looking to land jobs<\/p>\n

Embiricos said that OpenAI receives several messages from engineers interested in applying for a job. However, there’s one kind that stands out. Speaking about job prospects, he said that since it has become easier to build products, engineers now need to focus on creating work that reflects initiative and judgement. He added that he would encourage engineers to \u201cbuild things that are high quality and then share those things.\u201d\u201cWe get a lot of inbound from folks both applying for jobs through the careers page or also on social. This is just me, but when someone writes to me with some interesting thoughts and a link to an interesting project, that gets my attention much more than a normal resume does,\u201d Embiricos said.He also noted that the competition for AI talent is \u201cincredibly fierce right now\u201d and said that even at OpenAI, the company invests significant effort in securing candidates it wants to hire.\u201cEven we feel it. You don’t just get whoever you want free,\u201d Embiricos addedSoftware engineering has been among the early professions affected by AI tools, particularly at the entry level, with some analysts forecasting workforce reductions at large technology companies as AI-assisted coding gains wider adoption.
