It was incredibly troubling, and that’s why head coach Meredith Black called timeout.

Whatever she dialed up in that pause worked, as the Golden Eagles were shot out of a cannon for the rest of the quarter. They scored the next five goals to take a 6-4 lead after the end of the first quarter, and then Hanna Bodner tallied to start the second quarter and MU was up 7-4. Don’t get me wrong: It helped that Maeve Brennan got whistled for not one but two dangerous follow through penalties in the first quarter, thus removing one of JU’s top scorers from the game. Her first yellow card wiped out the goal she scored, and her second one led to MU’s final goal of the first quarter on top of merely eliminating her from the final 47 minutes of action.

However, it turns out that Jacksonville is allowed to adjust as the game goes along as well. By the time the second quarter ended, JU had scored six of the next seven goals and they led 10-8 at intermission. Riley Jenkins scored with 5:30 left in the third quarter to pull Marquette even at 10 goals each, but that was pretty much the end of the good news for the Golden Eagles. Jacksonville put together a 5-1 run over right about 10 minutes of game time to get themselves up four, 15-11, and they held Marquette without a goal from Sarah Beth Burns’ marker with 2:14 left in the third until Ella Mautz scored with 2:53 left in regulation.

That’s nearly a full quarter of the game that went by without Marquette being able to find the net. Burns scored again for Marquette with 2:11 left to pull the visitors within two and crack the door open for a wild comeback, but Jacksonville won the ensuing draw and buzzed 40 seconds off the clock. 1:34 was probably not going to be enough time for Marquette, but Taylor Kotschevar’s near-immediate turnover eliminate the last gasp of hope.

Sarah Beth Burns had four goals to lead Marquette in that column, while Dani Serrano had two goals and four assists to lead MU in points. Black switched goalies at halftime, so Jillian Howell left after giving up 10 goals on 14 shots on frame, and I suppose officially that means that Mikayla Yang had a better day, giving up five goals on 10 shots on goal.

Up Next: Marquette will try to shake off this three game losing streak when they visit Youngstown State this coming Friday. First draw is set for 11am Central time out in Ohio, but it looks like we’ll have to get by with just live stats. The Penguins are 0-5 on the year and coming off a 14-5 loss at UMBC back on Wednesday afternoon.

Follow Anonymous Eagle on social media

Facebook: AnonymousEagle
Instagram: AnonymousEagleSBN
Bluesky: AnonymousEagle

Last time Marquette women’s lacrosse took to the field, they dug themselves into a 4-0 hole and never…

[5136
5229,267521,3188,723,219528,7310,267520,267522,67,586,132,5230,68,2969
post-626133","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-jacksonville","tag-america","tag-beth-burns","tag-fl","tag-florida","tag-golden-eagles","tag-jacksonville","tag-marquette-university","tag-meredith-black","tag-united-states","tag-united-states-of-america","tag-unitedstates","tag-unitedstatesofamerica","tag-us","tag-usa
["GET
