{"id":627524,"date":"2026-03-02T19:49:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-02T19:49:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/627524\/"},"modified":"2026-03-02T19:49:14","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T19:49:14","slug":"jersey-city-pivots-pompidou-site-to-affordable-housing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/627524\/","title":{"rendered":"Jersey City pivots Pompidou site to affordable housing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/play-icon.png\"\/> Listen to this article<\/p>\n<p>Jersey City Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/njbiz.com\/tag\/james-solomon\/\" class=\"st_tag internal_tag \" rel=\"tag nofollow noopener\" title=\"Posts tagged with James Solomon\" target=\"_blank\">James Solomon<\/a> announced a deal March 2 with Kushner Real Estate Group to convert the planned <a href=\"https:\/\/njbiz.com\/tag\/pompidou\/\" class=\"st_tag internal_tag \" rel=\"tag nofollow noopener\" title=\"Posts tagged with Pompidou\" target=\"_blank\">Pompidou<\/a> Museum site in <a href=\"https:\/\/njbiz.com\/tag\/journal-square\/\" class=\"st_tag internal_tag \" rel=\"tag nofollow noopener\" title=\"Posts tagged with Journal Square\" target=\"_blank\">Journal Square<\/a> into <a href=\"https:\/\/njbiz.com\/tag\/affordable-housing\/\" class=\"st_tag internal_tag \" rel=\"tag nofollow noopener\" title=\"Posts tagged with affordable housing\" target=\"_blank\">affordable housing<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>NJBIZ previously reported on the project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jerseycitynj.gov\/cms\/one.aspx?portalId=6189744&amp;pageId=17756408\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">to bring a satellite location of the famed French museum to Journal Squar<\/a>e. The plan eventually became a political football, <a href=\"https:\/\/njbiz.com\/nj-pulls-plug-on-pompidou-jersey-city-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">with state funding ultimately pulled in June 2024<\/a>.\u00a0In an attempt to resuscitate the project, the previous administration, under Mayor Steven Fulop, granted a 30-year tax abatement to KRE; the city received 100,000 square feet of space at the ArtWalk Towers development at 808 Pavonia Ave.\n<\/p>\n<p>Solomon succeeded Fulop in January. He previously raised concerns about the project during his time as a councilman and opposed the tax abatement.\u00a0Shortly after taking office as mayor, Solomon declared the Pompidou project \u201cdead\u201d as the city wrestles with a major budget shortfall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe previous administration left <a href=\"https:\/\/njbiz.com\/tag\/jersey-city\/\" class=\"st_tag internal_tag \" rel=\"tag nofollow noopener\" title=\"Posts tagged with Jersey City\" target=\"_blank\">Jersey City<\/a> with no financially responsible way to move forward with the Pompidou concept,\u201d said Solomon. \u201cBut we appreciate KRE\u2019s willingness to partner with us on a new vision.\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>That kind of flexibility deserves recognition. It\u2019s exactly the kind of partnership this city needs, and the type of work that will be a trademark of this administration.<br \/>\u2014 Jersey City Mayor <strong>James Solomon<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThey came to us with a proposal for pivoting from the museum to badly needed affordable housing. That kind of flexibility deserves recognition. It\u2019s exactly the kind of partnership this city needs, and the type of work that will be a trademark of this administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What works for the neighborhood<\/p>\n<p>The revamped plan will unfold at Artwalk Towers, located across from the Journal Square PATH station.\n<\/p>\n<p>Construction on the first phase of the two-tower project is already underway. The development secured $175 million in financing in late 2024.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-399413 size-thumbnail\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"Jonathan Kushner, president, KRE Group\" width=\"120\" height=\"150\" data-lazy- data-lazy- data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Jonathan-Kushner_web-e1772479474531-120x150.jpg\"\/>Kushner\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been building in Journal Square for over two decades, and we\u2019re invested in this community\u2019s future,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/njbiz.com\/2025-commercial-real-estate-power-list-k-m\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">KRE President Jonathan Kushner<\/a>. \u201cWe want what is best for the neighborhood and all of Jersey City and reimagining this project as affordable housing pushes forward our long-term dedication to building a better Jersey City. We\u2019re proud to partner with the city on this.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Ward C Councilman Tom Zuppa applauded the agreement.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJournal Square\u2019s revitalization is going to be for our residents who deserve access to affordable housing and my expectation is to provide them with much needed space for community, whether that be for recreation, seniors, artists, or a mix of the above,\u201d said Zuppa.\n<\/p>\n<p>Officials said they will also explore adding community space.
