JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 Year two at the Division II level has turned into a breakthrough season for Edward Waters University women\u2019s basketball.<\/p>\n
The Lady Tigers are ranked No. 24 nationally in the WBCA Coaches Poll, the first Top 25 ranking since the program transitioned to Division II. EWU sits at 23-4 overall with a 21-3 mark in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. Along the way, they captured their first SIAC East Division title and set a new single-season program record with a 14-game winning streak.<\/p>\n
The tone for the season shifted in December when EWU knocked off Division I opponent Bethune-Cookman University 55-46 at the HBCU Hoops Invitational in Orlando. Since then, defense has become the Lady Tigers\u2019 calling card.<\/p>\n
Edward Waters is allowing just 49.4 points per game \u2014 the best mark among Division II programs and ranks among the national leaders in opponent field-goal and three-point percentage. Over their last 10 games, nine opponents have failed to reach the 50-point mark.<\/p>\n
Offensively, balance has fueled the surge. Tan Brown leads the team at 14 points per game and tops the SIAC in three-pointers made.<\/p>\n
With the conference\u2019s best overall record, EWU earned a first-round bye in the SIAC Tournament and will open play March 4 at the Clayton County Convocation Center in Morrow, Georgia.<\/p>\n
