This is smack in the middle of the\u00a0Biscayne Aquifer where South Florida gets its water supply.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Remember Marjorie Stoneman Douglas. A high school was named after her. She was a great champion of the Biscayne aquifer<\/a>. Wikipedia<\/p>\n

Authority officials saw this massive investment of tax dollars as a way to set off an explosion of private development in what they viewed as a soggy and valueless land.<\/p>\n

\u201cA new city is going to rise up in the middle of Florida,\u201d the authority chairman boasted.<\/p>\n

Imagine his surprise when an odd coalition formed to oppose this supposedly foolproof plan. Hunters, anglers, high school students, Native Americans, and birdwatchers all said, \u201cWhoa, that\u2019s a terrible idea!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
