The original intent was to allow only one ADU, which is short for accessory dwelling unit. The word \u201caccessory\u201d is key. It means it is \u201caccessory\u201d to the permitted single-family home. It was originally intended to house family members.<\/p>\n<p>Now some developer wants to build 120 ADUs! They cannot all be \u201caccessory\u201d to the original home. This is ridiculous. City leaders should be ashamed for letting this issue get so out of hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Albert Bates, 4S Ranch<\/p>\n<p>Re \u201cSan Diego reins in controversial bonus ADU incentive\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/2025\/06\/16\/bonus-adu-incentive-rollback-vote\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">June 16<\/a>): So the city will now have a four-unit max in some cases for property owners who want to build ADUs. How about a one-unit cap everywhere?<\/p>\n<p>This all started as \u201cmother-in-law\u201d units in people\u2019s garages or backyards.
