If you heard that a new 20-screen complex was about to hit New York City<\/a>, you\u2019d expect that it would likely be a cluster of large rooms screening a Nicole Kidman commercial dozens of times a day. But Tim League<\/a>, the man behind the film lovers\u2019 favorite Alamo Drafthouse<\/a>, has something entirely different in mind. Coming soon \u2014\u00a0exact date to be determined \u2014 Metro Private Cinema<\/a> will provide an experience that lives up to its name.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a night out,\u201d League told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview<\/a>. \u201cIf you\u2019re going to casually catch \u2018The Legend of Ochi,\u2019 you\u2019re probably going to go to the IFC Center, you\u2019re going to go to the Alamo, to the AMC. But if you want to have what we\u2019re trying to create, a very special experience with dinner, friends and a movie, I think there\u2019s an audience for it here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Upon the opening in Chelsea, moviegoers will be able to choose a theater ranging in size from four to 20 seats \u2014\u00a0and we mean comfy, fancy chairs and sofas<\/a>. Then they can choose the movie and a gourmet menu. The movie, too, doesn\u2019t need to be a current release. Patrons can select a favorite from a large library of retro offerings, as well. The meals will be only the finest \u2014\u00a0THR\u2019s coverage cited \u201cstone fruits, heirloom tomatoes, and summer squash\u201d as samples. League, too, said that they hope to offer \u201ccinematic adventures,\u201d as well, with themed meal experiences for popular titles. Its website already lists<\/a> dining menus for \u201cSuperman,\u201d \u201cGoodfellas,\u201d and even the fall release \u201cWicked: For Good.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhenever we\u2019ve done that type of thing at Alamo, it\u2019s been some of my favorite moments and we\u2019re just trying to go even further,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not a typical night at the theater. Instead, it\u2019s a movie night that someone else is in charge of cleaning up. That said, it is pricey. The food is $100 per person \u2014\u00a0not including alcohol. The rooms range from $200 to $600 or even more, depending on the party size.<\/p>\n

League, who stepped down<\/a> as Alamo Drafthouse<\/a>\u2018s leader in 2020, has long advocated for creating unique experiences for film<\/a> fans. In 2017, he penned an editorial for IndieWire<\/a> expanding on his position.<\/p>\n

\u201cCinemas are in the business of offering an incredible, immersive experience that you simply cannot duplicate at home,\u201d he wrote. \u201cOur job is to put on a show and provide a great value proposition for getting out of the house, turning off your phone and enjoying great stories in the best possible environment. At our best, cinemas should also be local community centers with a real, tangible relationship to their surrounding neighborhood.\u201d<\/p>\n

One difference, League said, with this new chain is that people will now be able to text and talk (an Alamo Drafthouse no-no), since they won\u2019t be in a theater with other strangers. \u201cIt\u2019s just you\u2019re a worse person if you do.\u201d<\/p>\n
