The San Jose Sharks have made a trade that could improve the Barracuda.<\/p>\n
The Sharks sent defenseman Jack Thompson to the Vancouver Canucks for defenseman Jett Woo.<\/p>\n
Also, an NHL executive, not with either San Jose or Vancouver, explained how this trade could help both organizations.<\/p>\n
Thompson, 23, was a 2020 Tampa Bay Lightning second-round pick, acquired in the Anthony Duclair trade in 2024.<\/p>\n
The 6-foot-1 right-hander had four goals and 10 points in 31 games with the San Jose Sharks last year but couldn\u2019t carve out a place on the NHL roster this season.<\/p>\n
Thompson has three goals and 12 points in 42 games with the Barracuda this year, averaging 18:46 a night.<\/p>\n
The San Jose Sharks has gained more defensive NHL-caliber depth, pushing out Thompson, who\u2019s set to become an RFA after this season.<\/p>\n
Woo, 25, was a 2018 Canucks\u2019 second-round pick.<\/p>\n
The 6-foot-0 right-hander has never played in the NHL, but he\u2019s been a staple of Vancouver\u2019s AHL affiliates for the last six years, the Utica Comets and Abbotsford Canucks.<\/p>\n
Last playoffs, Woo averaged 21:23 a night, fourth among Abbotsford defensemen, helping the Canucks win the Calder Cup.<\/p>\n
Woo is set to become a UFA after this season.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust as good but equally different players,\u201d the exec said. \u201cJett is more a harder, skating defenseman.\u201d<\/p>\n
Woo is also more defensively-oriented than Thompson, which helps to balance the Barracuda blueline. Luca Cagnoni, Lucas Carlsson, and Mattias Havelid are more offensive, while Woo, Nolan Allan, and Braden Hache lean more defensive.<\/p>\n
