Now parents are scrambling to find it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmara9j5001y26nlazmqfsxs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meagan Johnson recently spent four days calling dozens of pharmacies across the Austin area<strong>,<\/strong> trying to fill a prescription for her son, Jack.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr9700072e6h5ui51f8m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jack has autism. At age 3, most kids have a vocabulary of 500 to 1,000 words. Jack can say about 20, Johnson said, \u201cand most of those 20, only I can understand.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmb30i3p00002e6hsu9prj7e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Johnson hopes her son could be helped by a prescription drug called leucovorin, which may help some children who have abnormally low levels of the vitamin folate in their brains. During a news conference last year, the White House touted it as a potential treatment for some children with autism. She wondered if it might be right for Jack, too.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr9800092e6hpsc9vqbj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Leucovorin is a high-dose vitamin \u2013 folinic acid \u2013 that until recently was mostly used to treat the toxic side effects of chemotherapy. In some cases, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/24\/health\/leucovorin-drug-trump-autism\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">families who have tried it<\/a> believe it has helped their nonverbal children develop more language and social skills. A few small studies have reported promising results when it is used off-label for children with autism.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmaykrn800023b6ubso41svk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In September, it got a boost after federal health officials including US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and US Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-takes-action-make-treatment-available-autism-symptoms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announced that it might help<\/a> some children with autism and said the FDA had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-takes-action-make-treatment-available-autism-symptoms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">begun the process<\/a> of approving the drug for a condition called cerebral folate deficiency, which shares features with autism and may affect some children who\u2019ve been diagnosed with it.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/img-0864.jpg\" alt=\"Meagan Johnson recently called dozens of pharmacies to find leucovorin for her 3-year-old son, Jack, who has autism.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"4776\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000a2e6hwrjxqld7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jack\u2019s doctors were skeptical. Both his pediatrician and his developmental pediatrician refused to prescribe the pill, saying there just wasn\u2019t enough research on it. Finally, Johnson found a neurologist willing to prescribe it on a trial basis.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000b2e6hg6yxt6yt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI know it\u2019s not a magic pill that\u2019s going to make my child speak overnight,\u201d Johnson said, but any improvement, no matter how small, would be welcome.  \u201cThat is a massive win in my book.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000c2e6hlqa0q470@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With a new prescription in hand, Johnson thought the hard part was over \u2013 until she tried to fill it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000d2e6hhic1lx3o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She estimates that she called as many as 40 pharmacies around Pflugerville, Texas, where she lives, trying to find one that had the pills in stock. She started with the grocery store pharmacy where she usually fills prescriptions but had no luck, and soon she had gotten the same answer from almost all the others in her area, whether they were big chains or small mom-and-pop stores.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000f2e6h0rj9eflg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She isn\u2019t the only one. In online support groups, parents with new leucovorin prescriptions often seek advice when they can\u2019t find the pills.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000e2e6hmptzyakc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI put literally 100% of my energy into it. I was on the phone from daylight till dark, calling, calling,\u201d said Johnson, who is between jobs, so she was able to dedicate more time.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000g2e6hx8drdttk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanc\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(26)00243-6\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">new study<\/a>, published Thursday in the journal The Lancet, is shedding light on why leucovorin has become so hard to find.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/gettyimages-2236806190.jpg\" alt=\"During a news conference in September, US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and President Donald Trump said leucovorin might help some children with autism.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"5654\" width=\"8321\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000h2e6h8lf6fi3z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Within weeks of the White House announcement, new prescriptions for leucovorin doubled, and they remained high through at least the first week of December, according to the research, which analyzed information on nearly 300 million patients in a large national electronic medical records database.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000i2e6hwacoeuy6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Study author Dr. Jeremy Faust, an emergency medicine physician at Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital, said he was concerned \u2013 but not surprised \u2013 to see the spike in new prescriptions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000j2e6hlpo9qgtf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think that the White House lectern is a very powerful place, and people do listen to our leaders, even though RFK says things like \u2018don\u2019t take medical advice from me.\u2019 People increasingly are choosing the kind of care they want based on politics. That\u2019s unfortunate,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000k2e6h2vasjsbq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The trend is alarming, Faust said, because the evidence behind leucovorin for autism is thin and doesn\u2019t warrant a shift in practice, at least not without more robust studies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000l2e6haq42b5y7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He said high-quality evidence often takes years to reach medical practice and patients.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000m2e6h5ng6266d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is just essentially vibes. It\u2019s taking one side of the research that is low-quality and running with that,\u201d Faust said. \u201cI\u2019m concerned about what it means.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmcg246g00082e6hrtxkkqb4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even without large placebo-controlled trials supporting its use in autism, some parents and doctors see little risk in trying the drug, a water-soluble vitamin that\u2019s easily flushed from the body in urine and has few side effects.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000n2e6hwkwuv4z8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The sudden increase in interest has created what drug supply experts call a demand-side shortage.  In demand-driven shortages, a spike in sales cleans off pharmacy shelves.  Manufacturers  are still making the drug but may not be able to adjust fast enough to  keep pace with new orders, said Erin Fox, associate chief pharmacy  officer at the University of Utah\u2019s Drug Information Service.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000o2e6hdjoksd5g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cGeneric manufacturers, they plan out their production usually a year, sometimes two years, in advance. So they were probably not counting on this demand,\u201d Fox said. \u201cEven if the White House gave them a heads-up, that doesn\u2019t mean that they can change their production schedule to make more.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2025-09-25t164135z-337791984-rc2hygaf9tq7-rtrmadp-3-usa-health-autism.jpg\" alt=\"A new study found that new prescriptions for leucovorin doubled and have remained high through at least the first week of December. With such high demand for the drug, it's getting harder for patients to find it.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2000\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000p2e6hwl69vbrv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A drug shortage list maintained by the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists shows that most manufacturers of leucovorin have the tablets on allocation or backorder. Allocation means they\u2019re rationing existing supplies of the drug and allowing pharmacies order only a limited amount.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000q2e6hssd941hk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Two manufacturers, Hikma and Pfizer, are listed as having the drug in stock.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000r2e6h99jqier2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In December, the FDA issued what\u2019s known as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/190268\/download?attachment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cDear Provider\u201d letter<\/a> to let doctors know that it was taking the rare step of allowing imports of leucovorin tablets from Canada and Spain to help ease the shortfall.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000s2e6hh15tc141@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The FDA doesn\u2019t have leucovorin tablets officially listed as being in shortage, however. Such a designation would trigger additional actions to help ease the supply crunch, including allowing certain compounding pharmacies to make more of it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000t2e6h2m1271i4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019ve never seen FDA import a product related to a shortfall when it\u2019s not listed as a shortage on their website,\u201d Fox said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmb4da2x00002e6h1jpgtfvb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            HHS did not answer questions about why leucovorin hasn\u2019t been added to the official list of drug shortages or about the supply in the US.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasifa700182e6h706v66dv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Alhough the government is allowing imports of the medication, that hasn\u2019t been enough to shore up supplies everywhere.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmaskp5g001c2e6hdc75345v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe are seeing supply challenges among certain versions of generic leucovorin,\u201d Roslyn Guarino, a spokesperson for CVS Health, said in a statement. \u201cIf a local CVS Pharmacy is temporarily out-of-stock of a medication, our pharmacy teams make every effort to ensure patients have access to the medications they need and, if possible, will work with patients and prescribers to identify potential alternatives.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000u2e6h6mv0ysz1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Laura Bray, who runs the nonprofit Angels for Change, which is focused on preventing drug shortages, said she began working to prevent a shortage of leucovorin last spring, after a news segment highlighted its use for children with autism. Bray knew that cheap generic medications like leucovorin, which has a history of going into shortage, are particularly vulnerable to demand-side shocks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000v2e6hk6kllsoa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She worked with entrepreneur<strong> <\/strong>Mark Cuban\u2019s CostPlus drugs to get it added to that marketplace, and it still has some strengths of the pills available.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000w2e6hmwm4v6y7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She said that whenever she gets calls from parents who are looking for leucovorin tablets, she sends them to CostPlus. But she said parents shouldn\u2019t have to hunt so hard to find it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000x2e6hbhaw0pgl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Johnson eventually connected with a helpful pharmacist at CVS who stayed on the phone with her and scoured an internal database to find enough to fill her son\u2019s prescription at a pharmacy nearly an hour\u2019s drive from her home.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000y2e6hlx2s7edr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even with a long drive, Johnson was relieved to get it and gave Jack his first dose that night.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr98000z2e6hqzjzityz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bray says parents shouldn\u2019t have to work so hard to find medications.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr9900102e6ho6bcjpo6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis was completely predictable, that this would happen,\u201d Bray said. \u201cThe steps that needed to happen so this wouldn\u2019t happen were also knowable.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmasbr9900112e6hrkyy50j6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She says that if her small nonprofit predicted it and took steps to alleviate it, the government should have, too.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmcu9fpg00013b6uf7d26kt6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Johnson agrees. \u201cIt shouldn\u2019t be this hard.
