(Chicago Tribune)\" width=\"386\" data- src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/CTC-L-DRED-SCOTT-DECISION-1857-01.jpg\" data-attachment-id=\"33392473\" \/>A &#8220;full and elaborate statement&#8221; of the U.S. Supreme Court&#8217;s Dred Scott decision was published on the Tribune&#8217;s front page on March 7, 1857. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1857:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-dred-scott-decision-chi\/192720311\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Supreme Court<\/a> issued its infamous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/jeff\/planyourvisit\/dredscott.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dred Scott decision<\/a>, which legitimized the institution of slavery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Scott family didn\u2019t find the freedom they sought through the legal challenge,\u201d according to the National Park Service. \u201cBut their courage and determination in filing this case helped bring about the Civil War and freedom from enslavement for all Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Weather records <\/strong>(from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/wrh\/climate?wfo=lot\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Weather Service, Chicago<\/a>)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High temperature: <strong>70 degrees<\/strong> (2000)<\/li>\n<li>Low temperature: <strong>0 degrees<\/strong> (2015)<\/li>\n<li>Precipitation: <strong>0.92 inches<\/strong> (1894)<\/li>\n<li>Snowfall: <strong>4 inches<\/strong> (1943)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"A crowd of 50,000 attends the burial services for Mayor Anton J. (Chicago Tribune archive)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1933:<\/strong> Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak died 20 days after he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/15\/february-15-chicago-history\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">struck by an assassin\u2019s bullet<\/a> presumably intended for President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt in Miami.<\/p>\n<p>Once at the hospital, Cermak reportedly uttered the line that is engraved on his tomb. Speaking to FDR, Cermak allegedly said:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2013\/02\/10\/tell-chicago-ill-pull-through\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2013\/02\/10\/tell-chicago-ill-pull-through\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cI\u2019m glad it was me instead of you.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0The Tribune reported the quote without attributing it to a witness, and most scholars doubt it was ever said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad addresses Black Muslims in Chicago in 1967 as world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali listens intently at left. (AP)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1964:<\/strong> Elijah Muhammad, head of the Chicago-based Nation of Islam, bestowed the name <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-muhammad-ali-clay-chi\/167194088\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Muhammad Ali<\/a> on new follower Cassius Clay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am honored,\u201d the heavyweight champion said when notified in Louisville, Kentucky.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Runner Tom O'Hara of Loyola pours it on in the home stretch, crossing the finish line in 3:56.4 to break his indoor mile record on March 7, 1964. Bruce Rauner offered two options to provide $215 million to Chicago Public Schools, Chance the Rapper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2017\/03\/07\/chance-the-rapper-writes-1-million-check-to-cps-as-a-call-to-action\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cut the district a $1 million check<\/a> that the Grammy-winning musician described as a \u201ccall to action\u201d for the city\u2019s business and philanthropic community.<\/p>\n<p>Chance was critical of the Republican governor\u2019s efforts to fix the city\u2019s schools during a news conference in West Chatham on the South Side, not far from the musician\u2019s old neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGov. Rauner still won\u2019t commit to give Chicago\u2019s kids a chance without caveats or ultimatums,\u201d Chance told students and reporters at Westcott Elementary School. \u201cGov.
