{"id":636471,"date":"2026-03-06T14:13:17","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T14:13:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/636471\/"},"modified":"2026-03-06T14:13:17","modified_gmt":"2026-03-06T14:13:17","slug":"what-houston-parents-should-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/636471\/","title":{"rendered":"What Houston parents should know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>HOUSTON <\/strong> \u2013 As Houston-area families gear up for spring break, experts are sounding the alarm: the combination of free time and teen loneliness can be a dangerous mix.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Bridget McCauley, Chief Clinical Officer at the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.councilonrecovery.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.councilonrecovery.org\/\"> Council on Recovery<\/a>, says that while spring break is supposed to be fun, it\u2019s also a time when substance use risk goes up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cTeenagers are really looking to connect and frequently find that alcohol and drugs are a way to connect,\u201d she explains. \u201cWe really want to help them understand that connection doesn\u2019t have to come with a hangover, and there are other ways that we can have fun and still connect with friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">During spring break, parents may still be working while teens are home or out with friends. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">McCauley says it\u2019s not just the lack of supervision that\u2019s risky, it\u2019s what happens when teens feel alone and disconnected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s not just the isolation that is the challenge,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s more, how can we help people connect?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">That drive for connection can push teens toward parties, drinking, and experimenting with drugs, especially if they believe that\u2019s what everyone else is doing.;<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">McCauley warns that using alcohol or drugs during adolescence doesn\u2019t just affect behavior in the moment; it can change the way the brain develops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Using substances \u201cwill actually disrupt the developing brain,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">It interferes with normal brain development and fast-tracks the brain\u2019s pleasure system, so teens start looking for quick fixes to feel better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">That puts them at higher risk for addiction. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">McCauley said research shows that about 70% of kids who try an illegal drug before age 13 are likely to develop a substance use disorder within seven years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">McCauley urges parents to start conversations early and keep them going. The goal is to make talking about drugs, alcohol, and mental health a normal part of family life, not a one-time lecture.,<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">McCauley calls increased isolation \u201cthe number one sign\u201d that a teen may be in trouble. That can look like:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Spending most of their time alone in their room<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Sudden changes in sleep patterns<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Pulling away from family or longtime friends<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Short, one-word answers, or avoiding conversation<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">She points out that depression and anxiety are already common among teens, and both \u201cbreed in isolation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">While many young people turn to technology and social media to feel connected, McCauley warns that constant scrolling can actually make things worse. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIsolation is a huge problem,\u201d she says, \u201cand then reaching to technology to connect is another problem. It\u2019s fueling the isolation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Even in a busy household, McCauley says parents can take small, intentional steps that protect their kids:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p><b>Plan at least one activity a day<\/b>\u00a0during spring break\u2014something outside the home or with others, if possible.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p><b>Check in frequently<\/b>, even if it\u2019s just a quick call or text when you\u2019re at work.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p><b>Encourage healthy outlets<\/b>\u00a0like sports, games, or getting outside in the nicer weather.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p><b>Build your own support system<\/b>\u00a0so you\u2019re not trying to handle everything alone.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s a lot of pressure on parents,\u201d McCauley acknowledges. That\u2019s why she encourages moms and dads to reach out for help, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIf a parent is concerned about their child, I would recommend that they call the Council on Recovery,\u201d she says. Parents can also talk to their child\u2019s healthcare provider or a trusted leader in their faith community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">As spring break approaches, the message is clear: connection protects kids.
