\n\tDaryl Hannah<\/a> is not in love with \u201cLove Story<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a New York Times op-ed<\/a> titled \u201cHow Can \u2018Love Story\u2019 Get Away With This?,\u201d the actor-director denounces Ryan Murphy\u2019s popular FX series \u2014 about the romance between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette \u2014 for its \u201clies\u201d and \u201cmisogyny.\u201d Hannah, who dated JFK Jr. prior to Bessette, is a central character in the show played by Dree Hemingway. The makers of the show did not consult with Hannah, and, as she points out in the op-ed, one producer has referred to her character<\/a> as an \u201cadversary\u201d in the story.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI have generally chosen not to respond to media coverage of me. I have long believed that engaging with distortion often amplifies it. But a recent tragedy-exploiting television series about John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette features a character using my name and presents her as me. The choice to portray her as irritating, self-absorbed, whiny and inappropriate was no accident,\u201d Hannah writes.<\/p>\n

\n\tShe opens the essay with advice she once received from none other than Jacqueline Onassis \u2014 who is portrayed by Naomi Watts in the series. \u201cShe told me that while tabloids, magazines and newspapers often sold ridiculous lies, they were nothing more than bird cage liner by the next day,\u201d Hannah writes. \u201cAt the time, I found great comfort and consolation in those words. But today they no longer hold true.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNow, Hannah argues, \u201clies live online forever,\u201d and \u201ca dramatized portrayal can become, for millions of viewers, the definitive version of a real person\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn making Hannah a spiteful obstacle to the coupling of JFK Jr. and Bessette, \u201cLove Story\u201d has turned \u201ca real, living person\u201d into a \u201cnarrative device,\u201d Hannah writes. \u201cPopular culture has long elevated certain women by portraying others as rivals, obstacles or villains. Isn\u2019t it textbook misogyny to tear down one woman in order to build up another?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe adds, \u201cThe character \u2018Daryl Hannah\u2019 portrayed in the series is not even a remotely accurate representation of my life, my conduct or my relationship with John. The actions and behaviors attributed to me are untrue. I have never used cocaine in my life or hosted cocaine-fueled parties. I have never pressured anyone into marriage. I have never desecrated any family heirloom or intruded upon anyone\u2019s private memorial. I have never planted any story in the press. I never compared Jacqueline Onassis\u2019 death to a dog\u2019s. It\u2019s appalling to me that I even have to defend myself against a television show. These are not creative embellishments of personality. They are assertions about conduct \u2014 and they are false.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSince \u201cLove Story\u201d premiered on Feb. 12 on FX and Hulu, Hannah says she has \u201creceived many hostile and even threatening messages from viewers who seem to believe the portrayal is factual.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI know that as an actress I will be in the public eye. I\u2019ve endured a number of outrageous lies, crappy stories and unflattering characterizations before,\u201d Hannah writes. \u201cI chose not to battle them but to focus on my work and respect my loved ones by keeping my private life private. But my silence should not be mistaken for agreement with lies. Apparently, my discretion makes me a target.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe adds that she has always \u201chonored\u201d the Kennedy family\u2019s right to privacy, and people \u201cclaiming to have any intimate knowledge of our personal lives are self-serving sensationalists trading in gossip, innuendo and speculation.\u201d Hannah concludes the op-ed with: \u201cMay love and truth prevail.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHannah is not the only public figure connected to the Kennedys who has spoken out about the show. Jack Schlossberg, JFK Jr.\u2019s nephew who is running for Congress, recently slammed the series as a \u201cgrotesque display of someone else\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLove Story\u201d creator and showrunner Connor Hines previously told Variety that he did not consult the Kennedy family<\/a> while making the series because \u201cas a writer, it\u2019s more healthy and effective to have some distance from the subject matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSeparately, Hemingway told Variety<\/a> that she wrote Hannah a \u201cnote\u201d detailing \u201chow much I loved her, and what an honor it was to play her.\u201d Hemingway added, \u201cThis whole project was made with so much love, and it is a love story that isn\u2019t supposed to be factual.\u201d <\/p>\n
