as &#8216;major flood&#8217; risk to remain until Sunday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As floodwaters continue to rise in the Northern Territory town of Katherine, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) predicts northern Australia will record one of its wettest seasons ever.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">NT Police Incident Controller Commander Shaun Gill has warned &#8220;the whole of Katherine is under threat now&#8221;, with two flood rescues carried out in Katherine overnight, &#8220;where people were trapped into houses&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He urged Katherine residents to enact their household emergency plans now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If you&#8217;re a person and you feel like you can&#8217;t get to or you don&#8217;t have the services now is the time to move to a shelter,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t want to be overly specific on it but it&#8217;s houses under threat, it&#8217;s houses under water.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said he did not yet have information about how many homes have already been affected by floodwater.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The flood conditions are only going to get worse in the short term,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">BOM&#8217;s Shenagh Gamble said Katherine River was &#8220;slowly reaching a peak&#8221; with flood risk expected &#8220;to stay above major&#8221; levels until Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So the Katherine community or township, is around 18.62 metres right now,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;[It] is expected to reach a peak of 19.2 metres during tonight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Once those river heights have peaked, we expect it to stay above major at the Katherine community and township for about 24 hours, so we expect it to stay above major through the weekend into Sunday.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Residents in the small community, 317 kilometres south-east of Darwin, woke up to find their main street had been submerged by flooding \u2014 despite advice from authorities yesterday that the centre of town would not be inundated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On ABC Radio Darwin this morning, NT incident controller Shaun Gill said six aircraft were now helping evacuate the remote community of Palumpa by air.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Evacuees will be staying at Marrara in Darwin, while Daly River (Nauiyu) resident are expected to be evacuated to Foskey Pavilion at the city&#8217;s showgrounds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-23\/daly-river-nauiyu-flooding-evacuees-return-home\/106372304\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Daly River residents return home after flood evacuation<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Flood evacuees from the remote community of Nauiyu have returned to their homes to survey flood damage after two weeks away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Locals in <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-23\/daly-river-nauiyu-flooding-evacuees-return-home\/106372304\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106372304\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the remote Indigenous community only returned home late last month<\/a>, after earlier rains caused Daly River to flood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said Katherine River was expected to peak around 19.2 metres today, which would likely submerge the town&#8217;s high-level bridge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-06\/katherine-river-major-flood-warning-beswick-emergency\/106422866\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106422866\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The river reached the major flood level yesterday<\/a>, with BOM reporting floodwaters at Katherine Bridge passed 18.6 metres around 8am this morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">BOM warned these kinds of &#8220;rapid river level rises&#8221; would continue as &#8220;further rainfall is expected during Saturday&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">BOM said &#8220;major flooding above the April 2006 flood level&#8221; \u2014 when the river peaked at 19 metres \u2014 was occurring this morning at the entrance to Nitmiluk Gorge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Katherine&#8217;s flood emergency warning was triggered yesterday, with the local hospital evacuated and closed, the Stuart Highway cut off and emergency shelters set up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Around 200 people across the Katherine region were sheltering in local schools as of this morning, and levees north of the town had been activated.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A hospital sign, with high water levels all around it.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/e69300300c9715d6c95c7a7bb55ec752.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Katherine Hospital was evacuated, with 21 patients and up to 20 pregnant women transferred to Darwin by air. (ABC News: William Green)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On Wednesday he said the temporary, affordable housing offered by the service had been at capacity for weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;In the two weeks leading into the big rain, [and] once it actually hit we were inundated with calls from people looking for a bed,&#8221; Mr Hamilton said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;For example, we&#8217;ve got a young woman who had a baby in late January and hasn&#8217;t been able to get home.
