Experts say such flooding kills more people than several other weather threats combined.<\/p>\n Due to steep terrain, shallow soil and intense rainfall rates, a large swatch of Texas has been dubbed \u201cFlash Flood Alley.\u201d<\/a> The alley follows Dallas-Fort Worth along the Interstate 35 corridor through Austin and San Antonio in the Hill Country and curves toward Del Rio in southwestern Texas.<\/p>\n The risk of flash flooding is projected to increase in the future as development in big cities causes more runoff.<\/p>\n Related<\/p>\n Shortly before 5 p.m., the weather service updated on social media <\/a>that a strong cap is preventing storms from developing, which reduces the overall threat for severe storms for the rest of the day. <\/p>\n However, there is a possibility of an isolated strong to severe storm through 10 p.m. <\/p>\n 4:55 p.m. Here\u2019s what to know about hail, how to protect yourself<\/p>\n Hail<\/a> forms when a raindrop is carried by a thunderstorm updraft to an extremely cold part of the atmosphere. It grows in size as other liquid water droplets collide with the hail and freeze onto the surface, according to the National Severe Storms Laboratory. <\/p>\n When the updraft can no longer support the weight of the hail or the gust weakens, the hailstones will be dropped from the sky.
