NEW YORK (PIX11) \u2014 Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is expected to announce he will continue his campaign in the mayoral race running as an independent, sources tell PIX11 News.<\/p>\n
Sources report that Cuomo plans to ask any candidate challenging Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani to withdraw from the race if they are not in the lead by September, including himself.<\/p>\n
More Local News <\/a><\/p>\n Mamdani\u2019s campaign provided the following statement to PIX11 News regarding the reports about Cuomo running in the general election: \u201cWhile Andrew Cuomo and Eric Adams are tripping over themselves to cut backroom deals with billionaires and Republicans, Zohran Mamdani is focused on making this city more affordable for New Yorkers. That\u2019s the choice this November.\u201d<\/p>\n Mamdani\u2019s comments about the Democratic candidates cutting backroom deals with Republicans come on the heels of Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa\u2019s claims that Adams floated making him the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety<\/a>.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Sliwa also responded to the reports, sending the following statement to PIX11 News:<\/p>\n \u201cAndrew Cuomo lost his primary and hides in the Hamptons. Eric Adams skipped his and fled to Fort Lauderdale. Now they\u2019re both running as independents to cling to relevance. I\u2019m the only candidate with a major party nomination, a 50-year record of serving New Yorkers, and a real path to victory. While they play musical chairs on a sinking ship, I\u2019m out campaigning in New York City, listening, leading, and fighting to win it for the people.
