{"id":640270,"date":"2026-03-08T05:38:41","date_gmt":"2026-03-08T05:38:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/640270\/"},"modified":"2026-03-08T05:38:41","modified_gmt":"2026-03-08T05:38:41","slug":"suspected-explosive-devices-thrown-during-nyc-protests-near-mayors-home-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/640270\/","title":{"rendered":"Suspected explosive devices thrown during NYC protests near mayor&#8217;s home: police"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Dramatic video captured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/new-york-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">New York City<\/a> Police Department (NYPD) officers subduing an 18-year-old counter-protester accused of lighting and throwing a suspected explosive device Saturday during dueling demonstrations just steps from Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Frictions began to build when two separate protests gathered near East End Avenue and East 87th Street late Saturday morning, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The NYPD and FBI New York&#8217;s Joint Terrorism Task Force are actively investigating the incident that involved two &#8220;suspicious items&#8221; near Gracie Mansion, and said there is no threat to public safety.<\/p>\n<p>The initial protest, called &#8220;Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City: Stop New York City Public Muslim Prayer,&#8221; was organized by individuals associated with pardoned Jan. 6 rioter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/anti-islam-protesters-muslims-clash-dearborn-michigan-after-man-attempts-burn-quran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Jake Lang<\/a>, and drew about 20 participants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The counter-protest, &#8220;Run the Nazis out of New York City: Stand Against Hate,&#8221; took place nearby, with roughly 125 participants at its peak.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/gracie-mansion-protests-002.jpg\" alt=\"A man appearing to throw a hand-made explosive device into a crowd\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>A man throws a handmade explosive at during a rally to stop public Muslim prayer, Saturday, in New York City.\u00a0 (Reuters\/Eduardo Munoz)<\/p>\n<p>Despite NYPD officers separating the groups into designated protest areas, tensions escalated shortly before noon and a protester associated with Lang used pepper spray against counter-protesters, Tisch said.<\/p>\n<p>Tisch said there was &#8220;a period of time&#8221; between the pepper spray incident and the arrest, as officers at the scene investigated.<\/p>\n<p>About 30 minutes later, officials said a counter-protester identified as 18-year-old Emir Balat threw an &#8220;ignited device&#8221; toward the protest area, landing in the crosswalk of East 87th Street and East End Avenue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/man-allegedly-assaulted-flagpole-minneapolis-anti-ice-agitators-violent-parking-garage-attack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>MAN ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTED WITH FLAGPOLE BY MINNEAPOLIS ANTI-ICE AGITATORS IN VIOLENT PARKING GARAGE ATTACK<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/gracie-mansion-protests-003.jpg\" alt=\"Jake Lang at a protest in New York\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Far-right activist Jake Lang leads a rally to stop public Muslim prayer, Saturday, in New York City.\u00a0 (Reuters\/Eduardo Munoz)<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses reported seeing flames and smoke as it traveled through the air, before it struck a barrier and extinguished itself a few feet away from police officers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Balat ran south on East End Avenue, toward 86th Street, and retrieved a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/terror\/bombings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">second device<\/a> from a 19-year-old man identified as Ibrahim Nikk, according to Tisch. He then lit the second device and started running.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities said Balat dropped the second device on the west side of East End Avenue, between East 86th and East 87th streets, before officers took Balat and Nikk into custody.<\/p>\n<p>Video showed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/crime\/police-and-law-enforcement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">police detaining<\/a> Balat, with his face pressed into the pavement, as he shouted expletives and words in another language.<\/p>\n<p>Three additional arrests were made at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/us-regions\/northeast\/new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the protests<\/a> related to disorderly conduct and obstructing traffic, according to Tisch.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/nyc-mayor-mamdanis-wife-liked-social-media-post-calling-oct-7-sexual-violence-investigation-hoax-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>NYC MAYOR MAMDANI\u2019S WIFE LIKED SOCIAL MEDIA POST CALLING OCT 7 SEXUAL VIOLENCE INVESTIGATION A \u2018HOAX\u2019: REPORT<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/gracie-mansion-protests-003-1.jpg\" alt=\"A man on the ground with NYPD officers on top of him\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>A man is detained by police officers during a New York City rally, Saturday, near Gracie Mansion. (Reuters\/Eduardo Munoz)<\/p>\n<p>Responding bomb squad crews examined the devices, which were a bit smaller than a football, and found they appeared to be jars wrapped in black tape.<\/p>\n<p>Using X-rays, authorities determined the devices contained nuts, bolts and screws \u2014 often used as improvised shrapnel in homemade explosives \u2014 along with a hobby fuse that could be lit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We do not yet know whether the devices were functional improvised explosive devices or hoax devices, because we don&#8217;t yet know if there was energetic material contained in them,&#8221; Tisch said.<\/p>\n<p>Officers continue to conduct manual and K-9 sweeps of surrounding blocks, inspecting garbage cans, vehicles and other locations where additional devices could potentially be hidden. (Reuters\/Eduardo Munoz)<\/p>\n<p>Both recovered devices are being transported by the bomb squad in a total containment vessel for further testing and analysis, Tisch said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tisch noted she believes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/person\/zohran-mamdani\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Mamdani and his family<\/a> were not home during the incident.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have been in regular communication today with Mayor Mamdani about the situation,&#8221; she said. &#8220;As of now, there is no indication that this is related to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/politics\/defense\/wars\/war-with-iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">ongoing hostilities in Iran<\/a>, but the investigation is still ongoing given the heightened threat environment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/foxnews.onelink.me\/xLDS?pid=AppArticleLink&amp;af_dp=foxnewsaf%3A%2F%2F&amp;af_web_dp=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.foxnews.com%2Fapps-products\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FOX NEWS APP<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The commissioner also thanked responding officers for &#8220;running toward danger when everyone else runs away.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Let me be clear: that happened today. Officers, many of whom are here with me, ran toward a man carrying an ignited suspicious device,&#8221; Tisch said. &#8220;They put the safety of others and their sworn duty to protect and serve above their own personal safety, and I am grateful that there were no injuries associated with the incident today.
