(AP) \u2014 Cole Palmer was jumping up and down behind Reece James as the Chelsea captain received the trophy for the Club World Cup, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-fifa-club-world-cup-92a5e1cf1e723bafed86cbf72e289646\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. President Donald Trump to his left<\/a>, standing between the midfielder and goalkeeper Robert S\u00e1nchez.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew he was going to be here, but I didn\u2019t know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy, so I was a bit confused,\u201d Palmer said.<\/p>\n<p>Palmer <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/palmer-golden-ball-club-world-cup-38e33aa8c9a451b035b7a1430dfee800\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">received the Golden Ball<\/a> as top player of the tournament after scoring the first two goals in <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/club-world-cup-final-chelsea-psg-score-bd3b0fb78c27cace1e8f7f6c555cb9c8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chelsea\u2019s 3-0 smothering of Paris Saint-Germain<\/a> on Sunday night. Trump appeared to leave the award stand with a medal of his own, handed to him by FIFA President Gianni Infantino right after the medallion presented to James.<\/p>\n<p>At 23, Palmer was selected player of the match for Chelsea\u2019s second straight final. A rising English star, he assisted twice in a 4-1 <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/chelsea-real-betis-uefa-conference-league-final-bb2c35847e6b911dcc35facc22b6ceff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">win over Real Betis on May 28<\/a> that won the Europa Conference League. He also scored the Blues\u2019 first goal in <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/club-world-cup-palmeiras-chelsea-4cf684781aa78ab6de5b8914b7845fd7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the 2-1 quarterfinal Club World Cup win<\/a> over Palmeiras and had England\u2019s goal in its 2024 European Championship final defeat to Spain.<\/p>\n<p>He had his name up in the bright lights this weekend. He posed for a photo in front of a huge video board of his image in a Nike ad emblazoned with the words: \u201cScary Good.\u201d It was part of a campaign that also features Kylian Mbapp\u00e9, Erling Haaland and Vin\u00edcius J\u00fanior.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen the billboards in Times Square and outside of Madison Square Garden,\u201d Palmer said. \u201cIt\u2019s a nice feeling to be obviously alongside them type of players.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Palmer had almost identical left-footed goals from just inside the penalty area in the 22nd and 30th minutes, then sent a through pass that enabled Jo\u00e3o Pedro to chip goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 43rd for his third goal in two starts with the Blues.<\/p>\n<p>Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who wanted to exploit space on PSG\u2019s left flank, told his players he wanted them to attack from the opening whistle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we won the game in the first 10 minutes and the message before the game was let them understand that we are here to win the game,\u201d Maresca said. \u201cProbably set a little bit the tone of the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chelsea went ahead after S\u00e1nchez kicked the ball downfield and Nuno Mendes mis-hit his header 15 yards past the midfield stripe toward his own goal. Malo Gusto\u2019s shot was blocked by Lucas Beraldo and rebounded to Palmer, who ended PSG\u2019s streak of 436 minutes without conceding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are the games where we expect Cole to appear because they are big games, big moments,\u201d Maresca said.<\/p>\n<p>Palmer doubled the lead in the 30th when he ran onto a long ball from Levi Colwill and cut inside before shooting for his 18th goal of the season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great feeling.
