A mother of two from the New South Wales Central Coast is in an induced coma in an Indonesian hospital after being hit by a truck while riding a scooter in Bali.<\/p>\n

Alivia Campbell, 28, from Berkeley Vale, had only been in Bali for 12 hours on a much-anticipated “girls’ trip” with two of her girlfriends when the crash happened on Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Her brother, David Campbell, said it was early in the morning when she “jumped on the scooter to go down to the shops” in Kuta.<\/p>\n

“They were going down to the beach and Alivia was going to grab a few things \u2026 and a truck collided with her,” he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Campbell said she suffered severe brain trauma and a serious pelvic injuries including a broken hip.<\/p>\n

The Sydney-based man was in a work meeting when he received a call from his sister, telling him what had happened.<\/p>\n

“When I found out, I was in complete shock \u2026 to even understand the depth of the accident or how Alivia was at the time” he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Campbell said he immediately called the friends who were with his sister and “got them to FaceTime her in the bed, and that was quite horrific”.<\/p>\n

According to the family, the priority was to ensure Ms Campbell, who has been in an induced coma and on a ventilator, remained stable.<\/p>\n

“We’ve still got a long way to go but we’re seeing some small improvements,” Mr Campbell said.<\/p>\n

“We still have a lot more tests and a lot more hoops to jump through before we’re anywhere out of the woods.<\/p>\n

“[It’s an] hour-by-hour situation.”<\/p>\n

Mr Campbell said his sister was expected to be in a coma for “at least seven days”, with a second surgery planned for later this week.<\/p>\n

Getting ‘Liv home’<\/p>\n

The family’s next challenge will be juggling logistics around flights, and working out what medical aid will be required to bring Ms Campbell back to Australia.<\/p>\n

Mr Campbell’s wife, Sophie, said it was a very difficult situation but praised the community for its support.<\/p>\n

“The layers of grief are so complex with us all being here and Alivia over in Bali,” she said.<\/p>\n

“It definitely feels like a nightmare \u2014 it’s not like she’s up the road at a local hospital.<\/p>\n

“[Especially] trying to have the time to grieve and go through all the administration processes and also come up with the funds.”<\/p>\n

Mr Campbell told the ABC the family was concerned his sister’s travel insurance policy might not cover scooter crashes because she did not have a local licence.<\/p>\n

He said a fundraising campaign had been launched to help with repatriation costs.<\/p>\n

He described his sister as a “vibrant beach lover” and a “very dedicated mum who loves her girls”.<\/p>\n

Ms Campbell’s daughters, aged 3 and 5, were at home with their father at Berkeley Vale when the crash happened.<\/p>\n
