The announcement comes after speculation the aging leader would not run, setting the stage for an electoral showdown.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Biya, Africa\u2019s second-longest-serving president after Teodoro Obiang of Equatorial Guinea, is frequently sick and abroad. Last year, talk spread that he had died, prompting the government to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cameroon-president-biya-return-health-60c15abc848d5de766b72c1139d147f3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">publicly deny the rumors<\/a>. Cameroon\u2019s second president since independence from France in 1960, Biya has been in power since 1982.<\/p>\n<p>Promising that the best is yet to come in his post on social media, Biya reiterated his determination to rule, saying, \u201cRest assured that my determination to serve you is commensurate with the serious challenges facing us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The more than 40 years of Biya\u2019s rule have left a lasting impact. His government has faced various challenges, including allegations of corruption and a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cameroon-abductions-separatist-fighters-women-3642ff828c6096a9bb415a5ac8846056\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">secessionist movement in Cameroon\u2019s English-speaking provinces<\/a> that has forced <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cameroon-education-separatist-conflict-language-4cee109cd90b1674107fbc77edb46a73\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">thousands out of school<\/a> and triggered deadly clashes with security forces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Biya\u2019s announcement to run again is a clear sign of Cameroon\u2019s stalled political transition. After over 40 years in power, what the country needs is renewal \u2014 not repetition. Cameroonians deserve democratic change and accountable leadership,\u201d Nkongho Felix Agbor, a human rights advocate and lawyer told The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>Cameroon has also had to deal with spillover violence by the Islamic extremist <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/boko-haram\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Boko Haram<\/a> group, based in neighboring Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cameroon-president-biya-election-challengers-0fecb20a350aa3fb5b74d94b0de67b86\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">several of Biya\u2019s longtime allies defected<\/a> to announce their own candidacies for president.<\/p>\n<p>He <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/general-news-d283f37c563f46949fefa409723560f4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cruised to victory in 2018 with over 70% of the vote<\/a> in an election marred by irregularities and low turnout due to ongoing separatist and jihadi violence.<\/p>\n<p>In a region threatened with <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/niger-coups-bazoum-sahel-military-democracy-d1614b14baff6571b7d3766c2cbd8ba1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shrinking democratic space<\/a>, several other African countries also have presidents accused of using state mechanisms to prolong their stay in power.
