{"id":64383,"date":"2025-07-14T08:20:15","date_gmt":"2025-07-14T08:20:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/64383\/"},"modified":"2025-07-14T08:20:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-14T08:20:15","slug":"gop-infighting-over-trumps-doge-cuts-to-take-center-stage-as-deadline-looms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/64383\/","title":{"rendered":"GOP infighting over Trump\u2019s DOGE cuts to take center stage as deadline looms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>      CNN<br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz2wazo018h27paaiayaem1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Congressional Republicans are launching into their next big legislative fight \u2014 this time over DOGE spending cuts for foreign aid and public broadcasting \u2014 that risks the wrath of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/president-donald-trump-47\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Trump<\/a> if they fail.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy00013b6n8cdnmkxa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With just days to go before a critical deadline, Trump himself is applying pressure to his party, even dangling the threat of withholding his endorsement to those on the fence about supporting what would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/04\/politics\/donald-trump-policy-bill-celebration\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">another major win<\/a> for the White House over Democrats in Congress.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy00023b6n6nh0k592@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Republicans on Capitol Hill are facing intense headwinds, with one of their own chairwomen still working to keep certain programs from the chopping block ahead of a firm July 18 deadline to sign those cuts into law. And that push is being closely watched by the GOP\u2019s fiscal hawks, many of whom remain angry at party leaders for forcing them to swallow trillions of dollars in tax cuts earlier this month.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz7gs3200033b6n0bm0vrov@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, GOP leaders believe they will ultimately deliver on the president\u2019s demands to claw back $9.4 billion in funds Congress already approved for foreign aid and public broadcasting programs \u2014 with Trump in particular leaning heavily on members.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy00033b6n7w19udgl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump\u2019s package, which is part of his cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency operation, will need to pass the Senate and the House by Friday, under an obscure presidential budget law used to circumvent the Senate filibuster. The GOP-led Senate is poised to make some changes that could be a tough sell in the House, marking the second time this month they\u2019ll be jamming the House on a Trump priority.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy00043b6naws36icp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump has made clear he will not tolerate Republican defections on the vote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy00053b6nlauehh8o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAny Republican that votes to allow this monstrosity to continue broadcasting will not have my support or Endorsement,\u201d the president wrote on Truth Social.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy00063b6nlerxja9s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Top Republicans, including Senate Appropriations Chair Susan Collins, have been working behind the scenes to adjust the White House\u2019s package of cuts, which would claw back $1.1 billion that Congress already approved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/12\/media\/pbs-npr-defund-rescissions-trump-conservative-media\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to local broadcasting stations<\/a>, including NPR and PBS, as well as global health programs like President George W. Bush\u2019s landmark PEPFAR program to fight AIDS.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy00073b6nbyn3cztb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Collins, the powerful Senate spending leader, has strongly opposed the White House\u2019s push to rescind $400 million for PEPFAR \u2014 a move she said would be \u201cextraordinarily ill-advised and shortsighted\u201d \u2014 as well as funding for maternal and child health programs. The Maine senator, who proved her willingness to buck Trump this month by voting against his sweeping policy agenda, is also up for reelection next November.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy00083b6nfiryzvoi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere are some cuts that I can support, but I\u2019m not going to vote to cut global health programs,\u201d Collins told reporters last week. She said she supports much of the funds devoted for public broadcasting, including emergency alert systems and local programming \u2014 but made clear she does not support money for all public media, specifically NPR.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy00093b6na362yy7j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe problem is NPR, which has a decidedly partisan bent,\u201d Collins said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy000a3b6n158k3yjy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Collins isn\u2019t the only one wanting changes. Senators from rural states, like Sen. Mike Rounds of South Dakota, told CNN he opposes the current package because of its effects on local radio stations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy000b3b6n2a6qai5w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI can\u2019t support this. I want to get to \u2018yes,\u2019 but I won\u2019t be there until we get the issue resolved with regard to these rural radio stations that take about 90% of their funding through this process,\u201d Rounds told CNN. The South Dakota Republican added that some of his constituents, mainly residents on Native American reservations in his state, will struggle to get access to information with these cuts to rural radio stations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy000c3b6ng4lr48bg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            GOP hardliners, however, don\u2019t want to see changes to the White House\u2019s package, which they already believe is not enough in cuts.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy000d3b6n6d8drrc0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Asked about the consequences if his colleagues make changes to the White House\u2019s cuts, Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin said: \u201cI\u2019m not going to like it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy000e3b6noflf5f95@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            House GOP leaders know there are plenty of their hardliner members who would, too, have a problem if Collins and others water down the cuts in the bill. But they believe they will still pass it by Friday \u2014 especially if Trump leans in.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy000f3b6n92xdvfw7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If it works, Congress will likely see more of these types of moves from the White House. Trump\u2019s team, led by budget chief Russ Vought, is attempting to make these cuts through a little-used mechanism that allows the Senate to avoid a filibuster.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy000g3b6nd02o8nal@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump tried the same tactic \u2014 known as a \u201crescission\u201d \u2014 in his first term, but the Senate ultimately voted the effort down in an <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2F2018%2F06%2F20%2Fpolitics%2Fsenate-vote-rescissions-package&amp;data=05%7C02%7CMegan.Trimble%40cnn.com%7C1067d0d22b5741edc8ec08ddc0a9c20f%7C0eb48825e8714459bc72d0ecd68f1f39%7C0%7C0%7C638878557522327539%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=s8JrYFdWqf7%2BNmiTI9RCeXFIuAx%2BgkDhJA9ArkMecSs%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">embarrassing flop<\/a> for the president. (Collins voted against that package, which included $15 billion in wide-ranging programs including children\u2019s health insurance and housing programs.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy000h3b6nsg38mylo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Vought and other fiscal hardliners have signaled they hope to deploy rescissions repeatedly in his second term to rein in Congress\u2019 spending without Democratic approval.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy000i3b6nymczv9rf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Democrats, for their part, have railed against the move, which they argue zaps any chance of bipartisan dealmaking ahead of the next funding deadline in September. Trump will need more than half a dozen Democrats to vote for any bill to keep the government open.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy000j3b6nf6wd751h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Schumer signaled in a floor speech that Trump\u2019s attempt to claw back money that both parties in Congress already agreed to spend could trigger a breakdown in talks \u2014 leading to a shutdown.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy000k3b6ntrm0pfyg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt is absurd to expect Democrats to play along with funding the government if Republicans are just going to renege on a bipartisan agreement,\u201d Schumer said on the floor last week.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy000l3b6ncdgekpt0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even some Republicans, though, aren\u2019t sure Trump\u2019s package can pass a narrowly divided Congress.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz5xmmy000m3b6npbwpoo91@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWill it pass? I don\u2019t know. I really don\u2019t know,\u201d GOP Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana said of the funding cuts. \u201cWe got a lot of Republicans who talk tough.
