Jack Osbourne<\/a><\/strong> set the record straight on his late father Ozzy Osbourne<\/a>\u2019s<\/strong> religious beliefs. During a March 2206 appearance on Jamie Kennedy\u2019s<\/strong>Hate to Break It to Ya podcast<\/a>, the son<\/a> of Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne<\/a> confirmed that his dad\u2019s Prince of Darkness persona was just a stage act, and that his image sometimes bothered him.<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing evil was ever in our household in that capacity,\u201d Osbourne, 40, told Kennedy. \u201cMy dad was a believer in Christ. He had a Bible<\/a>. He wore a cross every day of his life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe got a lot of frustration about it because he’s like, \u2018People are saying I’m this thing and I’m not this thing,'” Osbourne continued of the Black Sabbath legend. \u201cThat’s why you cannot ever trust the news, right? The news declared, you know, it would be all over CNN or news stations, oh, \u2018Ozzy\u2019s a Satanist who’s gonna do all this stuff,\u2019 because, you know, if you see this part in a song, it could be this and that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ozzy joked about devil worship<\/p>\n

Ozzy Osbourne, who died in July 2025 at age 76, liked to play up a Satan-worshipping persona.<\/p>\n

In 2002, he joked to Metal Hammer<\/a>that Satan protected him from getting COVID 19. \u201cMy wife had the virus; my daughter had the virus and I never got it,\u201d the singer said at the time, adding, \u201cBeing a devil worshipper does have its good points!\u201d<\/p>\n

In a 1986 interview with Spin, reposted by The Guardian<\/a>, Ozzy confirmed he was a non-practicing Christian. \u201cI was christened as a Christian. I used to go to Sunday<\/a> school. I never took much interest in it because \u2026 I didn\u2019t,\u201d he admitted. \u201cMy idea of Heaven is feeling good. A place where people are alright to each other. This world scares the s— out of me. We\u2019re all living on the tinderbox.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of his song lyrics, he explained, \u201cI mention the word \u2018death.\u2019 I mention the word \u2018evil\u2019, but in the context of the story, it\u2019s like Mary Had a Little Lamb. They all think I\u2019m singing, \u2018Satan, Satan, Satan, Satan \u2026 death, murder, murder.\u2019 They think that\u2019s all that comes out of my mouth. They never stop to listen. They\u2019ve already prejudged me and tried me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI might start singing f—ing religious songs,\u201d he added. \u201cI don\u2019t think so, but if I choose to, why not?\u201c<\/p>\n

In a 1992 interview clip posted by Audacy<\/a>, Ozzy reaffirmed his faith. \u201cI’m not against the church at all,\u201d he said. \u201cBut all I ever wanted to do was have a lot of fun with people. I believe in God. I don\u2019t go to church, but I don\u2019t think you have to \u2026 go to church to believe in God,\u201d the rock legend added.<\/p>\n

Ozzy\u2019s dad made crosses for the band<\/p>\n

In the early days of Black Sabbath in the 1970s, Ozzy\u2019s bandmate Geezer Butler was interested in the occult. “I totally believed in the devil,\u201d Butler told MOJO in an interview, per Classic Rock<\/a>. \u201cI started reading books<\/a> by Aleister Crowley and Dennis Wheatley, especially The Devil Rides Out, which was meant to be a cautionary tale, but which read like a handbook on how to be Satanist.”<\/p>\n

Butler changed his tune after an inexplicable experience with a black shadowy figure in his room, but by that time, Black Sabbath\u2019s music<\/a> had already been labeled by some.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t think anything of it until the first American tour,” Butler told Metal Hammer <\/a> in 2019. “There was some black magic organization that wanted us to play at a stone circle\u2026 We said no \u2013 we were sort of against Satan as opposed to promoting it \u2013 so they allegedly cursed us. The head of the white witches called our management and said he knew we had a curse put on us, and we should wear crosses, and he\u2019d do a ritual thing. It all sounds so hokey.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why we started wearing crosses!\u201d Butler added. \u201cOzzy\u2019s father made them for us. He used to work at a metal factory making car parts, so he made us these great big crosses out of spare metal.\u201d<\/p>\n
