HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — What started as a movie watch party has grown into a space for movie lovers to celebrate black stories and creators.<\/p>\n
Black Cinema Club HTX was sparked by the release of Sinners, which received a record 16 Academy Award nominations. Houston Actors Jerry Madison Jr and Leroy Cook said during the film’s initial release, they wanted to watch the movie with other Black movie lovers.<\/p>\n
“It all started off as a text message; let’s go support this film, let’s watch it together. It blew up like wildfire,” Cook said.<\/p>\n
Since that first gathering, the group has hosted monthly events, including mixers and screenings celebrating black films and filmmakers.<\/p>\n
“As we know, stories reflect life, and if you can’t see yourself on screen, you’re not able to see what you’re capable of,” Madison shared.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the Academy Awards, BCCHTX is hosting a special screening of Sinners at River Oaks Theatre, Sunday, March 15 at 11 a.m., followed by a watch party.<\/p>\n
To mark one year of the group’s founding, Black Cinema Club HTX is also launching its inaugural Film Festival April 17-19, 2026.<\/p>\n
