{"id":646298,"date":"2026-03-10T19:52:23","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T19:52:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/646298\/"},"modified":"2026-03-10T19:52:23","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T19:52:23","slug":"snohetta-and-big-among-architects-of-ion-riva-masterplan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/646298\/","title":{"rendered":"Sn\u00f8hetta and BIG among architects of Ion Riva masterplan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Architecture studios <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/snohetta\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sn\u00f8hetta<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/BIG\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BIG<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/MVRDV\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MVRDV<\/a> are among those designing landmarks for the 84\u2011hectare Ion Riva <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/masterplans\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">masterplan<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/Istanbul\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Istanbul<\/a>&#8216;s northern Beykoz district.<\/p>\n<p>Set to be built on the coast of the Black Sea, the project will comprise a quartet of landmark cultural spaces and provide homes for\u00a03,000 residents.<\/p>\n<p>International studios <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snohetta.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sn\u00f8hetta<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/big.dk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BIG<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mvrdv.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MVRDV<\/a> are working on the project alongside a team made up of local studios <a href=\"https:\/\/keym.com.tr\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">KEYM<\/a>, DB Architects, Rasa and <a href=\"https:\/\/bilgin.studio\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bilgin Architects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2304068 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/ion-riva-big-snohetta-mvrdv-architecture-turkey_dezeen_2364_col_17-852x461.jpg\" alt=\"Ion Riva masterplan aerial view\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1278\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Sn\u00f8hetta, BIG and MVRDV are working on the Ion Riva masterplan. Visual by Sn\u00f8hetta<\/p>\n<p>According to the project team, Ion Riva is a &#8220;landscape-led masterplan&#8221; that prioritises a connection to the site&#8217;s position between different natural landscapes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At Ion Riva, we have worked with the landscape as the first architect,&#8221; said Sn\u00f8hetta co-founder Kjetil Thorsen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The meeting of forest, river and sea creates a natural framework, and our task has been to strengthen those conditions rather than overwrite them.&#8221;<strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2304078 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/ion-riva-big-snohetta-mvrdv-architecture-turkey_dezeen_2364_sq2-852x852.jpg\" alt=\"The Ring by Sn\u00f8hetta\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Sn\u00f8hetta is developing The Ring as a cultural landmark. Visual by Sn\u00f8hetta<\/p>\n<p>The masterplan is being developed for the Turkish organisation Ion, founded by the architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2023\/11\/06\/turkey-syria-earthquake-mehmet-kalyoncu-interview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mehmet Kalyoncu<\/a>, who is also spearheading the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/turkey-syria-earthquake\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Turkey-Syria earthquake<\/a> rebuild as chair of the Turkey Design Council.<\/p>\n<p>Snohetta&#8217;s main contribution to the Ion Riva is The Ring \u2013 an elevated circular structure that bridges a river and will contain community spaces for educational purposes. Visual by Beauty &amp; The Bit<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, BIG is developing The Drop \u2013 a teardrop-shaped timber structure that will contain eateries, art and wellness spaces.<\/p>\n<p>BIG partner Hanna Johansson said the design aims to make &#8220;the landscape and the coastline do as much of the work as the architecture&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Black Sea shore is dramatic and wild, and our role has been to create a structure that allows people to experience that environment up close \u2013 to feel the wind, the light and the rhythm of the sea and that invites people to gather in simple, joyful ways,&#8221; Johansson explained.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2304055 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/ion-riva-big-snohetta-mvrdv-architecture-turkey_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x655.jpg\" alt=\"The Drop in the Ion Riva masterplan\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1818\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The teardrop-shaped structure will contain wellness spaces. Its architect and design are yet to be revealed, but it is expected to provide additional arts, education and wellness spaces.<\/p>\n<p>Ion Riva will be delivered in phases, with the first expected to introduce 969 homes, into which the first residents are expected to move in 2027.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2304060 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/ion-riva-big-snohetta-mvrdv-architecture-turkey_dezeen_2364_col_9-852x852.jpg\" alt=\"The Lantern by MVRDV\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>MVRDV is designing The Lantern. Visual by MVRDV<\/p>\n<p>This first wave of homes will include three\u2011 to six\u2011bedroom villas, organised around internal courtyards that pay homage to the region&#8217;s vernacular.<\/p>\n<p>Ion Riva&#8217;s buildings will be constructed with a predominantly natural material palette, including local stone and cross-laminated timber.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2304073\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/ion-riva-big-snohetta-mvrdv-architecture-turkey_dezeen_2364_col_22-852x475.jpg\" alt=\"Ion Riva masterplan\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1319\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The first phase will include three\u2011 to six\u2011bedroom villas. Visual by Bilgin Architects<\/p>\n<p>Alongside homes and the cultural buildings, the masterplan has dedicated green spaces and walkable streets, with shaded paths and trails.
