\n\tRachel Zegler<\/a> recently opened up to Harper\u2019s Bazaar<\/a> about the backlash she faced for playing \u201cSnow White<\/a>\u201d in Disney\u2019s 2025 live-action remake.<\/p>\n

\n\tBecause of her Colombian heritage, Zegler faced aggressive pushback from conservative circles, who thought the title role of Snow White should be played by a white woman. The \u201cY2K\u201d star said the experience was \u201creally confusing,\u201d considering she also faced backlash for playing Maria in 2021\u2019s \u201cWest Side Story\u201d because her father was white.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was told I wasn\u2019t enough of one thing for \u2018West Side Story\u2019 and too much of another for \u2018Snow White,\u2019\u201d Zegler said.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI grew up proud of being Colombian,\u201d she later added. \u201cEating the food, wearing the dresses, drinking the coffee, doing all the things that were so intrinsic to who I was as a kid and who I am as an adult \u2014 but I do think there\u2019s an argument to be made that, in the public eye at least, when you\u2019re two things, you\u2019re simultaneously nothing. But I refuse to assimilate for anybody else\u2019s comfort.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tZegler also faced backlash for posting on social media in support of Palestine while on the \u201cSnow White\u201d press tour. Although she still stands by her decision to use her platform to promote social change, she now sees the controversy as \u201ca complete study in intent versus impact.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou live and you learn, and there\u2019s a caution that comes with that,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s an understanding that the temptation to speak doesn\u2019t always mean that it must be done, and that there are a lot of opportunities to make more meaningful change than a tweet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 2024, days after unveiling the first trailer for \u201cSnow White\u201d at a D23 fan event, Zegler took to X and thanked her fans for all their support. Then, in the same thread minutes later, she wrote, \u201cAnd always remember, free Palestine.\u201d Zegler went on to admit that the backlash from the post was completely unexpected.<\/p>\n
