Yellowstone National Park (YNP) has announced its first grizzly sighting of the year.<\/p>\n<p>YNP shared that park biologists working in the northern part of the park saw a grizzly scavenging on a bison carcass in the backcountry on Monday, March 9. Historically, YNP has reported its first spring grizzly in early March: <a href=\"https:\/\/buckrail.com\/yellowstone-confirms-first-grizzly-bear-tracks-sighting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">in 2025<\/a>, it was March 14; <a href=\"https:\/\/buckrail.com\/yellowstone-national-park-reports-first-official-grizzly-sighting-on-march-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the year before<\/a>, it was March 3; it was March 7 in <a href=\"https:\/\/buckrail.com\/first-grizz-sighting-of-2022-in-yellowstone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">both 2022<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/buckrail.com\/yellowstone-reports-first-grizzly-sighting-of-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen bears emerge from <a href=\"https:\/\/buckrail.com\/explainer-hibernation-vs-torpor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">hibernation<\/a>, they look for food and often feed on elk and bison that died over the winter,\u201d YNP\u2019s announcement reads. \u201cBears may react aggressively to encounters with people when feeding on carcasses. Male grizzlies come out of\u00a0hibernation\u00a0in early March. Photo:  Jim Peaco \/\/ National Park Service<\/p>\n<p>YNP advises visitors to protect themselves and to protect bears by doing the following:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prepare for a bear encounter by\u00a0carrying bear spray, knowing how to use it and making sure it\u2019s accessible.<\/li>\n<li>Stay alert.<\/li>\n<li>Hike or ski in groups of three or more, stay on maintained trails and make noise. Avoid hiking at dusk, dawn or at night.<\/li>\n<li>Do not run if you encounter a bear. Stay 100 yards away from black and grizzly bears. Approaching bears within 100 yards is prohibited. Use binoculars, a telescope or telephoto lens to get a closer look.<\/li>\n<li>Store food, garbage, barbecue grills and other attractants in hard-sided vehicles or bear-proof food storage boxes.<\/li>\n<li>Report bear sightings and encounters to a park ranger immediately.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cBear spray has proven effective in deterring bears defending cubs and food sources,\u201d YNP stated. \u201cIt can also reduce the number of bears killed by people in self-defense.
