Economist and market commentator Peter Schiff<\/strong> is questioning President Donald Trump<\/strong>‘s willingness to ask Americans to tolerate higher costs tied to the war while avoiding similar short-term sacrifices to reduce government spending and the federal deficit.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump is willing to force Americans to suffer the short-term pain of paying higher energy prices for the long-term gain of winning the war against Iran,\u201d Schiff wrote on X<\/a> on Monday. \u201cWhy is Trump not also willing to ask Americans to accept short-term pain to cut government spending to reduce budget deficits?\u201d<\/p>\n

The comments come as gas prices across the U.S. have climbed quickly since the conflict began shaking global oil markets<\/a>. According to<\/a> AAA, the national average for regular gasoline recently reached $3.578 per gallon on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Trump addressed the surge in an interview with Reuters<\/a> on March 5, downplaying concerns about the increase and framing it as a temporary cost tied to the conflict.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have any concern about it,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019ll drop very rapidly when this is over, and if they rise, they rise<\/a>, but this is far more important than having gasoline prices go up a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schiff has also warned that many Americans may be underestimating the potential economic fallout if the conflict drags on.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe world is overly optimistic, particularly Americans, on this war,\u201d Schiff said in a video posted on X<\/a> on Wednesday. \u201cI think people still think it\u2019s going to be short and sweet, a quick mission accomplished.\u201d<\/p>\n

He argued that expectations for a smooth outcome are unrealistic, pointing to past U.S. conflicts in the region.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have no reason to believe that the outcome this time is going to be any more successful than our other adventures into that region, whether it\u2019s Iraq, whether it\u2019s Afghanistan,\u201d Schiff said. \u201cI think it\u2019s going to be a mess.\u201d<\/p>\n
