AP<\/p>\n<p>But last Wednesday she<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/boards-policy-regulation\/x-ceo-yaccarino-step-down-surprise-move-2025-07-09\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> announced her departure<\/a>, citing X\u2019s merger with Musk\u2019s AI venture xAI as a turning point and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/09\/technology\/linda-yaccarino-x-steps-down.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">calling it a \u201cnew chapter\u201d for the company.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Multiple people who worked with both Yaccarino and Musk said the two were fundamentally mismatched. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSheryl [Sandberg]<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/02\/07\/tech\/mark-zuckerberg-sheryl-sandberg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> found the rhythm with Mark<\/a> [Zuckerberg]. Linda couldn\u2019t find the rhythm with Elon,\u201d one source told FT, referring to the former chief operating officer of Meta\u2019s relationship with the CEO.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Their contrasting styles \u2014 Yaccarino\u2019s polished advertising world background versus Musk\u2019s unfiltered, hands-on leadership \u2014 clashed repeatedly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElon calls all the shots,\u201d an advertising executive who knows both Yaccarino and Musk told FT. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe tried to ride the tiger but was thrown off.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yaccarino last week resigned from her role as X CEO after two years on the job. He wants to have an authentic conversation and not be bullsh\u2013ted.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A breaking point reportedly came early last year, when Yaccarino helped secure a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/10\/media\/don-lemons-lawsuit-against-elon-musk-for-axing-x-show-gets-green-light\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">content deal with former CNN anchor Don Lemon. \u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The arrangement backfired after <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/11\/13\/business\/ex-cnn-anchor-don-lemon-says-he-is-quitting-x-over-new-terms-of-service\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Lemon conducted a contentious interview with Musk<\/a>, asking if he used drugs. Musk canceled the deal, and Lemon is<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/24\/media\/elon-musk-seeks-dismissal-of-don-lemons-lawsuit-over-canceled-x-deal\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"> now suing for breach of contract.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The aborted content deal with Don Lemon also proved to be a turning point in the Musk-Yaccarino relationship, according to reports. Multiple people who worked with Yaccarino said she was \u201cat times being tearful in the office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One former colleague told FT: \u201cShe lasted two years in a job that would have crushed most people in two weeks.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Though she managed to lure back some major advertisers like Apple, Google and Verizon, many in the industry questioned the sustainability and strategy behind the return.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo her credit, she did get advertisers back to X,\u201d one longtime executive told FT. \u201cShe did it with a gun, but they came back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another added, \u201cThey did not return voluntarily or happily.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Others criticized the platform\u2019s underperformance. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany clients don\u2019t advertise on X, not because of the content, but because it does not perform very well,\u201d one executive told FT. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sensor Tower reported some renewed ad strength, and Emarketer projected a revenue increase to $2.3 billion in 2025 \u2014 still far below the $4.1 billion in global sales before Musk\u2019s takeover.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>People familiar with the situation said that Musk and Yaccarino never \u201cfound the rhythm.\u201d REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>The Post has sought comment from X, Yaccarino\u00a0and Musk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yaccarino\u2019s priorities sometimes diverged from Musk\u2019s,<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/12\/09\/business\/xs-linda-yaccarino-elon-musk-back-landmark-kids-online-safety-act-urge-house-passage\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"> particularly around child safety<\/a> \u2014 a concern she reportedly believed Musk was not focused on enough, according to FT. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She ultimately informed a small circle ahead of time about her resignation, which happened to coincide with xAI\u2019s chatbot Grok publishing antisemitic content, FT reported. X staff said the two events were unrelated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yaccarino\u2019s challenges began as soon as she took the job in 2023, leaving NBCUniversal to help repair the damage Musk\u2019s $44 billion takeover of the platform had inflicted on advertiser relations. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Brands had fled the platform, citing Musk\u2019s volatile behavior and tolerance of toxic content. She was known as the \u201cVelvet Hammer\u201d in the industry, with a reputation for toughness and a powerful Rolodex of brand contacts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Musk\u2019s decision to bring in Mahmoud Reza Banki to be chief financial officer of X spelled trouble for Yaccarino, according to reports. Facebook\/Mahmoud Reza Banki<\/p>\n<p>She scored some victories, securing deals with creators and sports leagues, upgrading X\u2019s video features and laying the groundwork for a digital wallet called X Money.<\/p>\n<p>She also aggressively pursued advertisers \u2014 at one point suing their trade group and companies like Shell and Pinterest, accusing them of an \u201cillegal boycott.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But despite her efforts, she never gained full control of the company. Musk retained ultimate authority, even in areas core to her role like advertising, the FT reported. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He began making unilateral decisions \u2014 banning hashtags in ads, charging brands based on vertical ad size \u2014 and hired product chief Nikita Bier without her input, according to FT.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Musk\u2019s growing relationship with President Donald Trump created further complications. His focus on politics temporarily drew attention away from X, offering Yaccarino some breathing room. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat saved her was the election and Elon diving deep into the administration,\u201d one person who worked with both told FT. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yaccarino also cited X\u2019s merger with Musk\u2019s AI venture xAI. Musk brought in Mahmoud Reza Banki as CFO, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/23\/business\/x-ceo-linda-yaccarino-shakes-up-inner-circle-amid-pressure-from-elon-musk-to-boost-sales-cut-costs-report\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">who reported directly to Musk<\/a> and bypassed Yaccarino.<\/p>\n<p>Their relationship grew strained, especially when Banki redirected funds away from creator and ad-tech investments \u2014 areas Yaccarino viewed as crucial, according to FT.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Publicly, Yaccarino remained loyal to Musk, but insiders suggested her style never resonated with him. Her deep ties to Trump, however, remain intact, according to the FT.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She is reportedly close to Ivanka Trump, HUD Secretary Scott Turner and Director of Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. One confidante said she still supports Trump despite his falling-out with Musk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her next move remains unclear.
