{"id":651328,"date":"2026-03-12T23:15:17","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T23:15:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/651328\/"},"modified":"2026-03-12T23:15:17","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T23:15:17","slug":"daily-multivitamins-slow-biological-aging-in-older-adults-study-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/651328\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily multivitamins slow biological aging in older adults, study shows"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Aging can&#8217;t be stopped, but a daily pill could slow it down, according to new research led by Mass General Brigham in Boston.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Among people who took a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/vitamins-supplements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">multivitamin every day<\/a> for two years, biological aging slowed down by about four months, found the study, which was published in Nature Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Biological aging refers to the pace of aging on a cellular level, which is often different from chronological age.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/brain-training-sessions-found-reduce-dementia-risk-decades-long-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>BRAIN TRAINING SESSIONS FOUND TO REDUCE DEMENTIA RISK IN DECADES-LONG STUDY<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The findings came from a large randomized clinical trial of nearly 1,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">healthy older adults<\/a> averaging 70 years of age. The participants were divided into four groups \u2014 one took a daily\u00a0 multivitamin-multimineral supplement along with a cocoa extract, one took a daily cocoa extract and placebo, one took a placebo and multivitamin, and one took just a placebo, according to the study press release.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/woman-shopping-for-vitamins.jpg\" alt=\"Woman shopping for vitamins\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Among people who took a multivitamin every day for two years, biological aging slowed down by about four months. (iStock)<\/p>\n<p>The researchers analyzed blood samples taken from the participants at three points during the study, looking at five biomarkers known as &#8220;epigenetic clocks&#8221; that measure age-related <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/genetics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">changes to DNA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Aging at the cellular level can be marked by DNA methylation, where in some cells it decreases and in some it increases,&#8221; Dr. Marc Siegel, Fox News senior medical analyst, told Fox News Digital. &#8220;This is also described as epigenetic changes \u2013 or DNA expression.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/missing-sleep-may-take-hidden-toll-your-brain-longevity-research-reveals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>MISSING SLEEP MAY TAKE A HIDDEN TOLL ON YOUR BRAIN AND LONGEVITY, RESEARCH REVEALS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Those who took multivitamins showed a biological aging slowdown across all biomarkers, including the two that are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/healthy-living\/longevity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">linked to longevity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest benefit was seen in those who already had a biological age that was older than their chronological age, the researchers found.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/seniors-hiking.jpg\" alt=\"Couple hiking\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Those who took multivitamins showed a biological aging slowdown across all biomarkers, including the two that are linked to longevity. (iStock)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is a lot of interest today in identifying ways to not just live longer, but to live better,&#8221; said senior author Howard Sesso, associate director of the Division of Preventive Medicine in the Mass General Brigham Department of Medicine, in the press release.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was exciting to see the benefits of a multivitamin linked with markers of biological aging. This study opens the door to learning more about accessible, safe interventions that contribute to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/geriatric-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">healthier, higher-quality aging<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>CLICK HERE FOR MORE HEALTH STORIES<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Siegel, who was not involved in the study, described the results as &#8220;scientific and significant,&#8221; agreeing that they should be studied further.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear which part of the multivitamin might be responsible for the aging slowdown, the doctor noted.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pull-quote\">\n<p class=\"quote-text\">&#8220;There is a lot of interest today in identifying ways to not just live longer, but to live better.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;There are so many possibilities, from biotin to calcium to zinc to vitamin B, C or D \u2026 to niacin and to metals like magnesium and copper,&#8221; he told Fox News Digital. &#8220;I am personally a believer in riboflavin, thiamine and vitamin D, but further research is needed to parse this out and determine a cause-effect relationship.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There were some limitations of the research, including that the aging effects were small, and it\u2019s not yet known how they might affect actual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">medical outcomes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/newsletters?cmpid=fnfirstnl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The study population was also limited to mostly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/geriatric-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">older ages<\/a> and those of European ancestry, which could mean it wouldn\u2019t be generalized to larger groups.<\/p>\n<p>The research also did not explore the relationship between epigenetic clock changes and actual health outcomes, such as lower disease risk or greater lifespan.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/magnesium-pills.jpg\" alt=\"Person taking vitamins\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Additional studies will also look at other potential benefits of daily multivitamins, such as cognitive function and reduced cancer risk.
