An officer-involved shooting<\/a> that left a man dead in Fort Worth<\/a> closed all northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 287 Thursday evening.<\/p>\n

As an officer was traveling northbound on U.S. 287 near E. Maddox Avenue, he noticed an unidentified man leaning over a bridge with an object in his hand, according to a Fort Worth police statement.<\/p>\n

The officer stopped to check on the man and realized he was holding something sharp. Police said the man then \u201cbegan to cut himself on the neck,\u201d according to the statement. <\/p>\n

As the officer got out of his vehicle, the man ran at him with the object, and the officer fired his weapon around 4:05 p.m., the statement said.<\/p>\n

Multiple callers reported that there was a man on the bridge with glass in his hand, the statement said. Another caller reported seeing the man run toward the officer before shots were fired.<\/p>\n

Medical aid was provided by officers, and the Fort Worth Fire Department was called to the scene. The man was pronounced dead around 4:28 p.m.<\/p>\n

Police said the officer involved in the shooting has been with the department for six years and is assigned to the central division.<\/p>\n

Investigators with the major case unit and internal affairs are on scene investigating, the statement said. It appeared that U.S. 287 lanes appeared to be reopening to vehicular traffic as of 7:45 p.m.<\/p>\n

No officers were injured during the encounter, according to the statement.<\/p>\n

Police said further details will be released as they become available.<\/p>\n

This marks the second fatal shooting by a police officer in North Texas this week. On Wednesday night, a man being investigated by Dallas police was shot and killed by officers<\/a> at Children\u2019s Medical Center Dallas.<\/p>\n
