{"id":651998,"date":"2026-03-13T05:55:20","date_gmt":"2026-03-13T05:55:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/651998\/"},"modified":"2026-03-13T05:55:20","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T05:55:20","slug":"traffic-officers-speed-trailer-may-be-added-to-se-military-drive-after-latest-crash-councilwoman-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/651998\/","title":{"rendered":"Traffic officers, speed trailer may be added to SE Military Drive after latest crash, councilwoman says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO<\/strong> \u2013 Months after the city made safety improvements to a stretch of Southeast Military Drive, the road is back in the spotlight after yet another person was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2026\/03\/11\/person-hospitalized-after-being-struck-by-vehicle-on-southeast-side-safd-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2026\/03\/11\/person-hospitalized-after-being-struck-by-vehicle-on-southeast-side-safd-says\/\">hit by a car while trying to cross the street<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">A 63-year-old woman suffered a broken ankle after she was hit just after 7 p.m. Tuesday while trying to cross between Old Corpus Christi Road and South Presa Street, KSAT reported earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Her story is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/09\/09\/southeast-military-drive-safety-under-scrutiny-after-two-deadly-pedestrian-crashes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/09\/09\/southeast-military-drive-safety-under-scrutiny-after-two-deadly-pedestrian-crashes\/\">far from the first<\/a>, however.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe need people to slow down and to be aware of their surroundings,\u201d District 3 councilwoman Phyllis Viagran said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">KSAT has reported safety concerns on this stretch of Military Drive since last August. Here\u2019s a brief timeline of our coverage:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">Aug. 21, 2025: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/08\/22\/pedestrian-killed-after-being-hit-by-vehicle-on-south-side-san-antonio-police-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/08\/22\/pedestrian-killed-after-being-hit-by-vehicle-on-south-side-san-antonio-police-say\/\">Jeanette Espitia<\/a> and her unborn child died after being hit and killed by a car on Southeast Military Drive<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\"\/>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">Nov. 13, 2025: The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/11\/14\/community-efforts-lead-to-new-pedestrian-safety-measures-on-southeast-military-drive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/11\/14\/community-efforts-lead-to-new-pedestrian-safety-measures-on-southeast-military-drive\/\">city responded<\/a> to these accidents and our reporting by upgrading the pedestrian crosswalk with new lights, signals and signs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Jeanette Espitia\u2019s brother, Jesse, was at the most recent crash Tuesday night and said it was hard to see another accident happen. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt brings back bad memories,\u201d Jesse said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">He\u2019s not alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThey need a better solution,\u201d neighbor Susan Herrera said. \u201cObviously, the lights aren\u2019t working as well as we had hoped.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Viagran said she doesn\u2019t have a timeline on long-term solutions, but said her office is working on accountability, awareness and education. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cOur plan is to work with the Transportation Department on how we share that space with walkers and cyclists,\u201d Viagran said. \u201cWe can get traffic officers out there, and we can get a speed trailer out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe want people to understand that they are sharing this portion of Southeast Military Drive with pedestrians,\u201d Viagran said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">A spokesperson with Public Works told us the department is reviewing the conditions of the crosswalk and location to \u201cdetermine whether additional measures could further enhance safety, such as improvements to traffic signal visibility and traffic signal timing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Preliminary report from San Antonio police said no arrests were made in the crash on Tuesday night.
