{"id":65253,"date":"2025-07-14T16:00:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-14T16:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/65253\/"},"modified":"2025-07-14T16:00:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-14T16:00:11","slug":"trump-announces-novel-plan-to-send-weapons-to-ukraine-and-gives-russia-new-deadline-to-make-peace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/65253\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump announces novel plan to send weapons to Ukraine and gives Russia new deadline to make peace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>      CNN<br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd33m1hm00w527qi86v177br@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When President Donald Trump won last year\u2019s election, European officials quickly began discussing how to sustain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/10\/politics\/us-weapons-ukraine-nato-deal-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US weapons shipments<\/a> to Ukraine under a leader who had vowed to pull back American support.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd33r1yc00053b6n2i4x07xl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Eight months later, the results of that plan are coming into view, with Trump on board with a novel idea to sell US weapons to European nations that will then transfer them to Kyiv.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd33r1yc00063b6nqefc70fz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The president announced the plan during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Monday. The president also laid out a new deadline for Russia \u2014 threatening trade consequences if no peace deal is reached with Ukraine within 50 days.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd39nhh8000e3b6ni31xco3p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don\u2019t have a deal in 50 days,\u201d Trump said. \u201cTariffs at about 100% you\u2019d call them secondary tariffs. You know what that means.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd39lpi8000a3b6n2j3jzscf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A White House official clarified to CNN that when the president referred to \u201csecondary tariffs,\u201d he meant 100% tariffs on Russia and secondary sanctions on other countries that buy Russian oil.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd33r1yc00073b6nmz52bbrv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As for the weapons, in addition to Patriot missile batteries \u2014 the top item on Kyiv\u2019s wish list and one Trump said Sunday was vital to Ukraine\u2019s defenses \u2014 the US could also sell short-range missiles, Howitzer rounds and medium-range air-to-air missiles to NATO members, which would then be transferred to Ukraine, a person familiar with the deliberations said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd33r1yc00083b6nu14314ib@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The thinking behind Trump\u2019s decision on weapons is multifold, officials said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd33r1yc00093b6nvi469yyh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            By selling weapons to European nations, rather than transferring them to Ukraine itself, Trump hopes to insulate himself from political criticism that he is reversing a campaign pledge to reduce the US role in the years-long war.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd33r1yc000a3b6n2oo2i8nz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He is also expecting a financial windfall: each Patriot missile system costs roughly $1 billion and he has already touted the profits for the US as part of the scheme.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd33r1yc000b3b6na6zd8kzc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            American officials also noted it would be quicker to get the Patriot systems to Ukraine if they are already in Europe as opposed to moving them from the United States or producing them new at a US factory.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd33r1yc000c3b6nwng07lw7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And, at least in the view of some US officials, providing Ukraine with a surge in new weaponry could send a signal to Moscow that Trump is serious about his frustrations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who the US leader accused of peddling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/09\/europe\/trump-putin-criticism-strikes-ukraine-russia-latam-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cbullshit\u201d<\/a> last week.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd33r1yc000d3b6n3jghqx7b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHe\u2019s seriously frustrated with Putin,\u201d a US official said. \u201cHe wants to show he\u2019s serious about ending the war, and maybe this will show Putin it\u2019s time to start negotiating.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd33r1yc000e3b6n74y5fdbf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The plan was discussed in earnest around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/25\/politics\/nato-meeting-trump-defense-spending\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">last month\u2019s NATO summit<\/a> in the Netherlands, where Trump met with European leaders and the Ukrainian president for talks described by people familiar as surprisingly productive.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd33r1yc000f3b6njnfv2g97@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But its origins actually came months earlier, after Trump won last year\u2019s election \u2014 thrusting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/06\/politics\/trump-election-ukraine-war-russia-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US support for Kyiv<\/a> into fresh doubt. European officials, at that stage, began conceiving of a way to allow for continued weapons support to Ukraine even if Trump pulled back Washington\u2019s role, as he had promised as a candidate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd33r1yc000g3b6nxv7blghm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For the last two weeks, officials in the US and Europe have been working on the details of how the plan would operate. NATO does not itself dispatch weapons to Ukraine, but rather acts as a clearinghouse, coordinating deliveries from individual countries.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd33r1yc000h3b6n6q4ed4o3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The mechanism for transferring the weapons could include European nations transferring weapons already bought from the United States and backfilling them with new purchases. Or they could purchase new US weapons for immediate transfer to Ukraine.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmd33r1yc000i3b6nght6lbsf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Among the countries already on tap to participate are Germany and Norway.
