{"id":65306,"date":"2025-07-14T16:28:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-14T16:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/65306\/"},"modified":"2025-07-14T16:28:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-14T16:28:11","slug":"liberal-party-to-launch-legal-action-after-losing-sydney-seat-of-bradfield-at-federal-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/65306\/","title":{"rendered":"Liberal Party to launch legal action after losing Sydney seat of Bradfield at federal election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The NSW Liberal Party will challenge the federal election result in the Sydney seat of Bradfield after losing it to teal independent Nicolette Boele.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a statement on Monday night, Liberal Gisele Kapterian said the decision to go to the &#8220;umpire&#8221; was about ensuring the final outcome reflected the &#8220;true wishes of the voters&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Over 118,000 ballots were cast by the people of Bradfield. The original count resulted in an eight vote lead my way,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;While the second count resulted in a 26 vote lead for Ms Boele. (Facebook: Gisele Kapterian)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She added that this step would &#8220;provide collective confidence&#8221; and &#8220;remove any remaining doubts created by the two conflicting counts&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, she also pointed out the move was not about casting doubt over the electoral system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;To be clear, there is no question regarding the integrity of our electoral system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;In fact, this process has only served to reaffirm my faith in Australia&#8217;s democratic institution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I am grateful for the AEC&#8217;s [Australian Electoral Commission] tireless work in delivering the two very close counts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Boele was declared the winner on June 4, more than a month after voters went to the polls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The challenge will be taken to the Court of Disputed Returns. The Chief Justice of the High Court would nominate a High Court or Federal Court judge to sit as the Court of Disputed Returns.<\/p>\n<p>Weeks of uncertainty<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">After weeks of uncertainty, Ms Boele beat Ms Kapterian by just 26 votes, with each woman leading in the electorate at different points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Kapterian released a statement a short time after her opponent declared victory and promised to &#8220;carefully review the two counts&#8221;, leaving the door open for a legal challenge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The historically blue-ribbon seat was initially called for Ms Kapterian on May 12 by the ABC&#8217;s chief election analyst Antony Green, when she was ahead by about 200 votes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"independent Nicolette Boele takes a selfie in front of a sign that says a woman's place along with image of female MPs\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/b39192539c2ec52352cdaaefc664a7b4\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Nicolette Boele won the seat of Bradfield by just 26 votes.
