But he conceded it would have been better if he had avoided being drawn on his previous remarks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I should have probably just said, &#8216;No, move on, let&#8217;s talk about things that matter to people&#8217;,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Instead, I tried to answer the question. (Supplied: SA Liberal Party)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Bernardi said the matter was &#8220;another scandal for the Liberal Party&#8221;. But he added that &#8220;people are allowed to have their own views&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The SA Liberal Party this week said Mr Woodhouse had &#8220;agreed to withdraw&#8221; his candidacy for the party after being asked to step down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But federal Liberal MP Tony Pasin expressed reservations about that outcome.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I was confused to learn about it because I&#8217;m someone who thinks the Liberal Party&#8217;s fundamental [tenets] are freedom of thought, religion, association,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve got to say it&#8217;s not a course of action I would have taken but I&#8217;m not a decision-maker when it comes to the state political campaign.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man with a Liberal logo on his jacket standing in front of a garden\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/7921682633a25dc3b6c9b31dfe1a9e1c.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Tony Pasin has weighed in on controversial candidate Carston Woodhouse. (ABC South East SA: Eugene Boisvert)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Pasin said while he had not seen Mr Woodhouse&#8217;s comments, he believed the Liberal Party was a &#8220;broad church&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If what we&#8217;re saying is that committed Christians, perhaps people with strong views, can&#8217;t be endorsed as candidates, that&#8217;s a difficulty \u2014 but, as I say, I haven&#8217;t seen his comments,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>$100m new gymnastics hub<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">After <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-13\/sa-leaders-debate-one-week-out-of-election\/106445662\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106445662\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Friday&#8217;s debate with Opposition Leader Ashton Hurn<\/a>, Premier Peter Malinauskas stepped up campaign efforts with an announcement he said would complement his party&#8217;s policy to keep children off screens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Malinauskas said a re-elected Labor government would build a new $100 million facility for Gymnastics South Australia in its next term of office, to be potentially jointly funded with the federal government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said the facility in &#8220;central metropolitan Adelaide&#8221; would replace the &#8220;leaking&#8221; and &#8220;decrepit&#8221; existing gymnastics centre in the city&#8217;s southern suburbs.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;We will have an immediate rapid-fire site selection process and then the money will be allocated in the state budget, subject to the election result, to build this brand new facility,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s been engaged with federally, and we continue to pursue that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The assessment of the current site is that to try and repurpose and refit it, you&#8217;ll actually end up with potentially an even more expensive outcome or a substandard one.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Malinauskas said if the new facility were ready in time, it would be available for athletes ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympics and Paralympics.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Peter Malinauskas and Ashton Hurn stand together in footy stands of an oval\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/e8feb2db41b19f4e39181bc71061cb24.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">SA Premier Peter Malinauskas and Opposition Leader Ashton Hurn participated in a debate on Friday. (ABC News: Che Chorley)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Gymnastics SA praised the announcement, saying it would deliver for the &#8220;nearly 5,000 children sitting on waiting lists wanting to do our sport&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This is obviously an enormous opportunity to bring them into our sport and have some of the life lessons and fundamental skills that everyone needs,&#8221; acting CEO Kent Davis said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;It also provides an opportunity for us to have a home for gymnastics and our events \u2014 we have nearly 50 events every year.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Fuel prices &#8216;number one issue&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Malinauskas was again asked about One Nation&#8217;s strong showing in recent polls. He said such support reflected &#8220;legitimate grievances within the electorate&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But he described the party as a &#8220;policy-free zone&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The rise of populism around the world is something I&#8217;m worried about \u2014 populism has real-world consequences,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Look at the price of petrol, for instance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-06\/sa-election-promise-tracker-2026\/106414866\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SA election promise tracker<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">We&#8217;ve gone through the major parties&#8217; promises ahead of the state election so you can compare what they have announced for you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Earlier, Mr Bernardi was bullish about One Nation&#8217;s prospects, saying it was gaining ground in Labor seats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;You can go into the northern suburbs of Adelaide, which is traditional Labor territory, and we get a very welcome reception there,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Right now we&#8217;ve got a government that&#8217;s focused on circuses \u2014 there&#8217;s not much bread there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The opposition leader, who on Saturday met voters at the Tanunda Show in the heart of her electorate, said the &#8220;number one issue&#8221; at the moment was fuel security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I&#8217;m interested to know how much supply we&#8217;ve got here in South Australia,&#8221; Ms Hurn said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I have spoken directly with the premier, and his team are facilitating a briefing for me.
