\n\tMatt Cameron sent shockwaves through the rock world last week when he announced his departure from Pearl Jam<\/a> after 27 years. \u201cI have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam<\/a>,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI am forever grateful to the crew, staff and fans the world over. It\u2019s been an incredible journey. More to follow.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThere\u2019s no reason to think Cameron\u2019s departure is anything but amicable, and the band even hugged him one by one following a champagne toast at the end of his last Pearl Jam at Pittsburgh\u2019s PPG Paints Arena on May 18. In hindsight, the brief North American arena run earlier this year seems like a friendly farewell to their longtime drummer. But the public still hasn\u2019t been told why Cameron left. He also didn\u2019t discuss any future plans.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut in a new Instagram Story on his official account,<\/a> Cameron made it clear that fans haven\u2019t seen the last of him. \u201cThank you for the kind words of support,\u201d he wrote, \u201cand for the record, I\u2019m still an active musician.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAt this point, nobody knows exactly what that means. But the surviving members of Soundgarden are now in possession of Chris Cornell\u2019s final vocal tracks, and they\u2019ve talked many times about turning them into the band\u2019s last album. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOur objective and goal was always to complete that,\u201d Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil told Rolling Stone in May.<\/a> \u201cI probably have OCD enough to not want to leave something unfinished or incomplete like that, so I think the more we can attend to our body of work and our catalog\u2026It would be a great gift to the fans. And I do think about this, and I don\u2019t know how strange this sounds, but I feel like it\u2019s a gift to Chris, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSoundgarden was initially on the bill of the Black Sabbath Back to the Beginning farewell concert, but they didn\u2019t wind up playing. \u201cWe are super bummed and regret that we were unable to coordinate the schedules of our individual and collective projects to attend and contribute to the festival,\u201d they wrote in a band statement on Instagram.<\/a> \u201cThe warmth, love and support from the Black Sabbath team has been a continuing source of encouragement and strength throughout our career.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThey\u2019ll have another chance to reunite Nov. 8 when Soundgarden are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. \u201cIt seems that that invitation is there,\u201d Thayil said. \u201cIt\u2019s up to the Hall to how they develop their program, but we would love to play there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPearl Jam, meanwhile, have made no announcement about how they\u2019ll carry on without Cameron. Some fans have fantasized about them mending fences with Vs.\/Vitalogy-era drummer Dave Abbruzzese after three decades of estrangement. In a post on Facebook,<\/a> Abbruzzese said that it remains a highly unlikely scenario.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe fact that I haven\u2019t had any personal contact with any of them leads me to believe the water under the bridge runs too deep and too icy for there to be any reconnection or reconciliation,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThis is a shame and saddens me, greatly. I know I could and would have much to contribute if indeed the call came, but sadly, I don\u2019t see that happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe then told fans to stop telling him to contact Pearl Jam management. \u201cI appreciate and understand your desire to see what could come out of that reunion musically,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI would be lying if I said I wasn\u2019t curious, also.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJust in case anyone was curious to see what it would be like to see Abbruzzese play Pearl Jam songs again, he posted a new video on Facebook<\/a> over the weekend where he recreated his original drum part to \u201cAnimal.\u201d He may not be reaching out to the band directly, but perhaps this is his way of showing that he still has the chops in the extremely unlikely event that they reach out to him.<\/p>\n
