{"id":654995,"date":"2026-03-14T11:56:55","date_gmt":"2026-03-14T11:56:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/654995\/"},"modified":"2026-03-14T11:56:55","modified_gmt":"2026-03-14T11:56:55","slug":"huge-wait-list-for-adhd-medication-amid-87-rise-in-prescriptions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/654995\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Huge wait list&#8217; for ADHD medication amid 87% rise in prescriptions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>There is still a \u201chuge wait list\u201d for people seeking medication for ADHD &#8211; despite an 87% increase in the number of prescriptions since 2020, a consultant psychiatrist has said.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurological condition that manifests itself in a number of ways, including inattentiveness and hyperactivity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the condition is treated through medication, while other people benefit from behaviour therapies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstalk.com\/shows\/newstalk-breakfast-234855\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Newstalk Breakfast<\/b><\/a>, Dr Patricia Byrne said there are \u201ca number of factors\u201d that have led to the increase in ADHD prescriptions and rejected the assertion that there is a \u201creaction to prescribe quickly\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cCertainly in Ireland, there&#8217;s a huge wait list in order to be able to access any of the publicly serviced services,\u201d she explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Ireland, we have a number of different things; ADHD Ireland is an excellent service which provides and is working as part of the Government&#8217;s care plan &#8211; providing intervention on a behavioural management of ADHD, psychoeducation, information about sports and schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, that&#8217;s a really, really important pathway, the behavioural aspects of that.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpecialists, both adult and child and adolescent mental health services, then have a role for children with moderate to severe ADHD, who need more than just behavioural management.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dr Byrne continued that \u201cunderstanding and awareness of ADHD has massively increased\u201d in recent years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This has led a huge number of referrals from people who suspect they or their child might have ADHD.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s a huge range of people seeking assessment and diagnosis at this stage,\u201d Dr Byrne said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTraditionally, in Irish Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services services, it was less than 5%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut currently, I would say that referrals to most CAMHS services querying ADHD is probably about half or even more of the referrals that the services receive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Main image: A person taking medication.
