After all, you\u2019re already exercising for your physical health\u2014are your regular workouts really pulling double duty? We tapped three physicians to find out. <\/p>\n<p>Why Exercise Is One of the Best Things for Your Brain<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Exercise provides incredible benefits for both short- and long-term brain health, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hss.edu\/profiles\/doctors\/tiana-woolridge\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.hss.edu\/profiles\/doctors\/tiana-woolridge\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Tiana S. Woolridge, MD, MPH\" data-node-id=\"6.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tiana S. In fact, a 2025 study in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamda.com\/article\/S1525-8610(24)00879-X\/abstract\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.jamda.com\/article\/S1525-8610(24)00879-X\/abstract\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Journal of the American Medical Directors Association\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Journal of the American Medical Directors Association<\/a> that followed nearly 90,000 adults over an average of 4.5 years found that doing as little as 35 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise each week lowered their risk of developing dementia by 41 percent. The more moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity people got each week, the lower their chances of dementia. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Scientists have found that physical activity directly changes the chemistry and structure of the brain. \u201cWhen you exercise, your brain releases several important chemicals. One of these, called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, stimulates the growth of new blood vessels and neurons in the brain,\u201d Dr. Woolridge explains. \u201cPhysical activity also triggers the release of molecules that reduce brain inflammation and protect brain cells from damage, while also boosting neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin that regulate mood and cognition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">It can even change the structure of your brain for the better over time, she adds. \u201cBrain scans show that people who exercise regularly can have stronger, healthier brain tissue and better brain function.\u201d <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">It\u2019s worth noting physical activity in early life (under the age of 30) is associated with better cognitive function decades later, according to Dr. Woolridge. But that doesn\u2019t mean there\u2019s no benefit from starting later in life. The brain benefits of exercise span all ages, but older adults often show the most dramatic cognitive improvements when starting an exercise program.  <\/p>\n<p>While all exercise benefits the brain overall, different modalities &#8220;target&#8221; If you want to improve your memory, cardio workouts (like running, walking, or swimming) are your best bet. And if you want to improve your overall brain function, lifting weights should be your focus. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cIn short, the best way to gain all of the benefits of exercise for brain health would be to engage in a variety of different exercises,\u201d says Dr. Woolridge. <\/p>\n<p>How to Reap the Brain Benefits of Exercise<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">T Even if you don&#8217;t work out primarily to improve your brain health, focusing on these qualities ensures your workout hits both your body and your mind. <\/p>\n<p>To get a quick mental boost\u2026 <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Even a little bit counts. The connection between brain health and exercise exists even in small doses, Dr. Woolridge says.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cThe relationship between exercise dose and brain health is more nuanced than \u2018more is better,\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cRecent research shows that even modest amounts of exercise can provide significant cognitive benefits, which is encouraging news for busy people who struggle to meet traditional exercise guidelines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"29\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Plainly: Get moving. Even if you only have time for a 15-minute brisk walk before work, it could help improve your processing. <\/p>\n<p>To maintain memory long term\u2026 <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"31\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Regular exercise is more beneficial for mental functioning than sporadic exercise, Dr. Fratellone explains. Dr. Timmerman agrees: \u201cMost studies and recommendations say to do at least moderate-intensity exercise on as many days as feasible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"32\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Dr. Woolridge suggests following the standard physical activity guidelines for adults, recommended by medical societies like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/initiatives\/behealthy\/physical-activity\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/initiatives\/behealthy\/physical-activity\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"World Health Organization\" data-node-id=\"32.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World Health Organization<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/fitness\/fitness-basics\/aha-recs-for-physical-activity-in-adults\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/fitness\/fitness-basics\/aha-recs-for-physical-activity-in-adults\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"American Heart Association\" data-node-id=\"32.3\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">American Heart Association<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/physical-activity-basics\/guidelines\/adults.html\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/physical-activity-basics\/guidelines\/adults.html\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\" data-node-id=\"32.5\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>: 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity per week, plus strength training twice weekly. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"33\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Getting your steps in matters, too, according to Dr. Woolridge. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaneurology\/fullarticle\/2795819\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaneurology\/fullarticle\/2795819\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Research shows\" data-node-id=\"33.1\" class=\"body-link css-1e57p3n emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Research shows<\/a> that approximately 10,000 steps per day provides the most protection from dementia, but even around 4,000 steps daily offer substantial benefits,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd the intensity of your steps matters: Purposeful, brisk walking provides greater cognitive protection than casual strolling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To stay as sharp as possible for as long as possible\u2026 <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"35\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Exercise should be included as part of a combination of lifestyle factors to protect brain health\u2014but it\u2019s not the only determining factor, according to Dr. Woolridge.
