It happens in movies, and in concerts. And it happens in ballet and opera, by the way,\u201d Spielberg, 79, continued during Friday\u2019s panel at the\u00a02026 SXSW\u00a0Conference and Festival, per <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/news\/steven-spielberg-timothee-chalamet-ballet-1236687368\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Variety<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He added as the crowd applauded: \u201cWe want that to be sustained. We want that to go forever.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Steven Spielberg (pictured here on Friday) said that after leaving an art performance, whether that be the movies or opera and ballet, \u201cwe are all united with a whole bunch of feelings.\u201d FilmMagic<\/p>\n<p>The filmmaker said there is nothing like that feeling and \u201cwe want that to be sustained. We want that to go forever.\u201d Getty Images for Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment<\/p>\n<p>A rep for Chalamet didn\u2019t immediately respond to Page Six\u2019s request for comment. <\/p>\n<p>Chalamet, 30, made his controversial comments while speaking with\u00a0Matthew McConaughey at a town hall event\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rQsTU1xSca8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">produced by\u00a0Variety\u00a0and CNN<\/a>\u00a0last month.<\/p>\n<p>During the event, which aired on CNN on Feb. 21, the \u201cWilly Wonka\u201d star said, \u201cI admire people, and I\u2019ve done it myself, who go on a talk show and say, \u2018Hey, we\u2019ve got to keep movie theaters alive, we\u2019ve gotta keep this genre alive,\u2019 and another part of me feels like if people want to see it, like\u00a0\u2018Barbie,\u2019 like\u00a0\u2018Oppenheimer,\u2019 they\u2019re going to go see it and go out of their way to be loud and proud about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But for Chalamet, he doesn\u2019t \u201cwant to be working in ballet or opera where it\u2019s like, \u2018Hey! Keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll respect to the ballet and opera people out there \u2026 I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I\u2019m taking shots for no reason,\u201d continued the Academy Award nominee.  <\/p>\n<p>Spielberg\u2019s comments come after Timothee Chalamet said \u201cno one cares\u201d about the ballet or opera during a CNN Town Hall in February (pictured above). CNN<\/p>\n<p>Chalamet added that he doesn\u2019t \u201cwant to be working in ballet or opera where it\u2019s like, \u2018Hey! Keep this thing alive.&#8217;\u201d CNN<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWant more celebrity and pop culture news?\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with Page Six Daily.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after his chat with McConaughey, 56, went viral, the Royal Ballet and Opera released a statement, telling\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/opera-ballet-respond-timothee-chalamet-comments-1236523633\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the Hollywood Reporter<\/a>, \u201cBallet and opera have never existed in isolation \u2014 they have continually informed, inspired, and elevated other art forms.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir influence can be felt across theatre, film, contemporary music, fashion, and beyond,\u201d they continued. \u201cFor centuries, these disciplines have shaped the way artists create and audiences experience culture, and today millions of people around the world continue to enjoy and engage with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ballet dancers and opera singers <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/03\/07\/celebrity-news\/timothee-chalamet-slammed-for-saying-no-one-cares-about-ballet-or-opera\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">also clapped back afterwards<\/a>, with US opera singer Isabel Leonard writing on Instagram at the time, \u201cHonestly, I\u2019m shocked that someone so seemingly successful can be so ineloquent and narrow-minded in his views about art while considering himself as an artist as I would only imagine one would as an actor.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>Chalamet (pictured here with Matthew McConaughey) was met with instant backlash. Shows a lot about his character.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Canadian mezzo-soprano Deepa Johnny chimed in, stating in the comments section, \u201cWhat a disappointing take. There is nothing more impressive than the magic of live theatre, ballet and opera.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Chalamet is currently gearing up for Sunday\u2019s Oscars.
