{"id":656362,"date":"2026-03-15T01:50:20","date_gmt":"2026-03-15T01:50:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/656362\/"},"modified":"2026-03-15T01:50:20","modified_gmt":"2026-03-15T01:50:20","slug":"umbc-athletics-social-media-takes-shot-at-alabama-football-after-clinching-march-madness-bid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/656362\/","title":{"rendered":"UMBC Athletics social media takes shot at Alabama football after clinching March Madness bid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the first time since becoming the first No. 16 seed to knock off a No. 1 seed in the 2018 NCAA Tournament, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/college\/umbc-retrievers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UMBC<\/a><\/strong> is back in the Big Dance.<\/p>\n<p>The Retrievers, led by head coach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/jim-ferry-133109\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Ferry<\/a><\/strong>, knocked off <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/college\/vermont-catamounts\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vermont<\/a><\/strong> 74-59 in the America East Tournament Championship on Saturday to secure the bid.<\/p>\n<p>Following their victory over No. 1 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/sites\/cavs-corner\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Virginia<\/a><\/strong> in 2018, <strong>UMBC<\/strong> Athletics gained notoriety on social media for their hilarious tweets. One of those tweets was directed at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/alabama-crimson-tide\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alabama<\/a><\/strong> football, fresh off its win over <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/georgia-bulldogs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Georgia<\/a><\/strong> in the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Just saying hello, we&#8217;ve be having some fun with No.1 teams lately, we don&#8217;t have a football team, though<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 UMBC Athletics (@UMBCAthletics) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UMBCAthletics\/status\/982427197934891016?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April 7, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>UMBC Athletics pokes fun at Alabama\u2019s Rose Bowl loss to Indiana<\/p>\n<p><strong>UMBC<\/strong> returned to social media prominence on Saturday, going after <strong>Alabama<\/strong> once again. Instead of respecting the Crimson Tide, however, the Retrievers went after their 38-3 loss to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/indiana-hoosiers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Indiana<\/a><\/strong> in the 2025 Rose Bowl Game.<\/p>\n<p>In that Rose Bowl game, <strong>Indiana<\/strong> jumped onto <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/kalen-deboer-135577\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kalen DeBoer<\/a><\/strong> and <strong>Alabama<\/strong> immediately. The Hoosiers held a 17-0 lead at halftime, and immediately responded with another touchdown in the third quarter to make it a 31-3 game after <strong>Alabama<\/strong> kicked a field goal to get on the board. The loss came as a massive disappointing to Crimson Tide faithful, disappointing with the program after losing their fourth game of the season.<\/p>\n<p>While <strong>UMBC<\/strong> is clearly joking, there\u2019s no doubt the joke will not go over well with <strong>Alabama<\/strong> fans. An NCAA Tournament matchup between the two programs would certainly be appointment viewing after the Retrievers\u2019 repeated jabs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UMBC<\/strong> is headed back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time under head coach <strong>Jim Ferry<\/strong>, who replaced head coach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/ryan-odom-134130\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Odom<\/a><\/strong> following his departure for the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/college\/utah-state-aggies\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Utah State<\/a><\/strong> job in 2021. Odom has emerged as one of the brightest coaches in all of college basketball since he left UMBC. He remained at <strong>Utah State<\/strong> for two seasons prior to jumping to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/college\/vcu-rams\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">VCU<\/a><\/strong>, where he spent two more seasons. He is currently in the midst of his first season at <strong>Virginia<\/strong>, and has the Cavaliers headed to the ACC Championship Game.<\/p>\n<p>The Terriers are seeking their second ever NCAA Tournament victory, as they immediately fell to No. 9 seed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/kansas-state-wildcats\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kansas State<\/a><\/strong> in the Round of 32.
