The entire Big Island was put under a flash flood warning shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday, March 14, as heavy rains continued their inundation.<\/p>\n<p>Hawai\u02bbi County officials said residents should continue to avoid all unnecessary travel as significant risks of flash flooding and strong, locally damaging winds .<\/p>\n<p>Later Saturday night they asked \u2014 and urged \u2014 people to shelter at home for safety reasons and allow response crews work safely on cleanup efforts without having to worry about anyone in their way.<\/p>\n<p>The storm produced heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts Saturday throughout large areas of Hawai\u02bbi Island, as well as flash floods that closed multiple sections of Highway 11 in Ka\u02bb\u016b. causing the county to urge residents in those areas to shelter in place.<\/p>\n<p><b>ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD<\/b><b>ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Some areas in Ka\u02bb\u016b received 10 to 15 inches of rain in 24 hours. They were relocated Saturday to the N\u0101\u02bb\u0101lehu shelter. Big Island first responders also rescued two visitors from a stranded vehicle near South Point.<\/p>\n<p>A high-water vehicle from Hawai\u02bbi National Guard was sent to N\u0101\u02bb\u0101lehu Fire Station to assist with emergency response.<\/p>\n<p><b>ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A flood watch and wind advisory remain in place. A high surf advisory for south-facing shores of the island also remains in effect, plus the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa continue to be under a winter storm warning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCounty of Hawai\u02bbi crews and our state partners are working hard to reopen roads and keep our residents safe,\u201d said Hawai\u02bbi County Mayor Kimo Alameda in a weather update. \u201cThe risk of flash flooding and strong, damaging winds remain[s] through Sunday, and we urge residents to avoid all nonessential travel for the rest of the weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weather conditions could escalate further with bands of heavy showers continuing Sunday to move over Hawai\u02bbi Island. The utility\u2019s focus Sunday will be on field inspections and repairing transmission lines. Damage assessments continue on\u00a0Hawai\u02bbi Island\u00a0in areas crews can access. Each island is in a different phase of recovery as the kona low continues making its way down the island chain. Crews are working as quickly and safely as possible to restore power.<\/p>\n<p>Schatz statement<\/p>\n<p>Hawai\u2018i Democrat U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz released this statement about the severe weather affecting communities throughout Hawai\u2018i:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cMy team and I are in contact with state and local leaders and closely monitoring the devastating storm impacting communities across Hawai\u2018i. The priority right now is keeping people safe and supporting first responders. Call 808-640-1020 for additional paratransit updates.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Camping permits at all Hawai\u2018i County parks are canceled through Monday morning (March 16).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Big Island summits<\/p>\n<p>Maunakea Visitor Information Station updated shortly before 7 a.m. Saturday on its Facebook page that stormy conditions were enveloping Mauna Kea\u2019s summit, with 77 mph winds and 96 mph gusts \u2014 \u201cdown from 118 mph!!!\u201d Click <a href=\"http:\/\/mkwc.ifa.hawaii.edu\/current\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"http:\/\/mkwc.ifa.hawaii.edu\/current\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a> to check current weather conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The summit access road was closed; road crews were assessing the situation to determine if it is safe to go up and clear the snow and ice from the roadway.<\/p>\n<p>Stay informed<\/p>\n<p>Hawai\u02bbi County will provide updates as conditions evolve.
