LOS ANGELES \u2014 Happy Oscars Sunday to all who celebrate.<\/p>\n
Conan O\u2019Brien kicked off the 98th Academy Awards Sunday night with a montage of clips from Best Picture nominees while taking on Amy Madigan\u2019s Aunt Glady from \u201cWeapons\u201d as kids ran behind him.<\/p>\n
O\u2019Brien didn\u2019t wait to hold back. He instantly joked about a Waymo hosting next year\u2019s ceremony in a tux. He took a swing at Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet\u2019s recent controversial remarks about opera and ballet.\u00a0<\/p>\n
What else can we expect at this year\u2019s ceremony?<\/p>\n
No awards show is complete without a musical performance.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Miles Caton and Raphael Saadiq performed \u201cI Lied to You,\u201d the nominated original song from \u201cSinners.\u201d They were joined by a bevy of performers onstage \u2014\u00a0Misty Copeland,\u00a0Eric Gales, Buddy Guy, Brittany Howard, Christone \u201cKingfish\u201d Ingram, Jayme Lawson, Li Jun Li, Bobby Rush,\u00a0Shaboozey\u00a0and Alice Smith among them \u2014 for a near-recreation of the scene in \u201cSinners\u201d where the song is introduced.<\/p>\n
It is one of the more memorable moments in the film, where a blues song in a Mississippi juke joint opens up to showcase hip-hop DJs, rock \u2018n\u2019 roll guitarists, ballerinas and more, illustrating the Black music genre\u2019s place at the foundation of American popular culture.<\/p>\n
When the live tribute performance to \u201cSinners\u201d wrapped on stage, there was a slew of applause, some of which came from people who stood for the ovation.<\/p>\n
One of the most highly expected reunions of the night will be the cast of \u201cBridesmaids.\u201d Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne, Ellie Kemper and Maya Rudolph will come together to celebrate the film\u2019s 15-year anniversary.<\/p>\n
Did we get a \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada\u201d reunion? Sort of …\u00a0Anna Wintour and\u00a0Anne Hathaway teamed up to present the costume design and make and hairstyling Oscars.<\/p>\n
Billy Crystal opened the in memoriam segment honoring his best friend, Rob Reiner.<\/p>\n
He ticked off a list of Reiner\u2019s films, including \u201cWhen Harry Met Sally,\u201d starring Crystal and Meg Ryan, \u201cStand By Me,\u201d \u201cSay Anything\u201d and \u201cThis is Spinal Tap,\u201d among many others.<\/p>\n

The Reiners were found dead in their Los Angeles home in December. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been charged in the deaths of his parents and has pleaded not guilty.<\/p>\n
Having a slew of actors with longstanding ties to Reiner \u2014 Meg Ryan, Kiefer Sutherland, Fred Savage, Demi Moore, John Cusack, Ione Skye and many others \u2014 come on stage for the tribute was reminiscent of how the Academy did the same for director John Hughes at the Oscars 16 years ago.<\/p>\n

Best Picture<\/b><\/p>\n Best Actor<\/b><\/p>\n Best Supporting Actor<\/b><\/p>\n Penn did not attend Sunday night’s ceremony.\u00a0<\/p>\n The win marks Penn\u2019s third Academy Award.<\/p>\n He previously won two Academy Awards for best actor for the 2003 crime drama \u201cMystic River\u201d and for portraying San Francisco politician and LGBTQ rights pioneer Harvey Milk in the 2008 biopic \u201cMilk.\u201d<\/p>\n Best Actress<\/b><\/p>\n Best Supporting Actress<\/b><\/p>\n \u201cThank you very much. I am very overwhelmed,\u201d said Madigan as she accepted her Oscar.<\/p>\n When answering press questions, Madigan said, “I loved the script as soon as I read it. I knew I could grab it by the throat.”<\/p>\n Madigan aslo hinted a potential prequel to “Weapons.”\u00a0<\/p>\n The last time she was nominated for an\u00a0Oscar\u00a0was for her role in 1985 family drama \u201cTwice in a Lifetime,\u201d setting a record for the longest gap between nominations for an actress.<\/p>\n Best Director<\/b><\/p>\n Best Animated Feature Film<\/b><\/p>\n \u201cThis is for Korea and for Koreans everywhere,\u201d said\u00a0co-director Maggie Kang as she received her Academy Award.<\/p>\n “Thank you to the Academy and to all the fans who got us here. And for those of you who look like me, I’m so sorry that it took us so long to see us in a movie like this. But it is here. And that means that the next generations don’t have to go longing,” she added.<\/p>\n Best Animated Short Film<\/b><\/p>\n “I guess, people think it takes patience to take five years to make a puppet film. It actually takes patience to live with someone who takes five years to make a puppet film. So, I’d like to thank my wife, Maya, and my daughter, Tulli,” said Chris Lavis as he accepted his award.\u00a0<\/p>\n Maciek Szczerbowski, who won with Lavis, said, “We just really want to thank our amazing neighborhood, and the amazingly talented community of artists that we’ve had the superb luck to work with. Thank you, the fantastic city of Montreal. Thank you, Canada.”\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Casting<\/b><\/p>\n \u201cI dedicate this to you and to the casting directors who never got a chance to get up here, who didn\u2019t even get a chance to get their name on the movie,” said Kulukundis when she accepted her Oscar.<\/p>\n Cinematography<\/b><\/p>\n Costume Design<\/b><\/p>\n \u201cOn behalf of myself and the amazing team that I work with, the artisans, the alchemists, dream weavers, we\u2019re so grateful to the Academy for recognizing our craft,\u201d said Hawley, the film\u2019s costume designer.<\/p>\n Documentary Feature Film<\/b><\/p>\n \u201c’Mr Nobody Against Putin’ is about how you lose your country. And what we saw when working with this footage is that you lose it through countless small, little acts of complicity,\u201d filmmaker David Borenstein said as he accepted the Oscar.<\/p>\n \u201cWe all face a moral choice, but luckily, even a nobody is more powerful than you think,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Documentary Short Film<\/b><\/p>\n In this short directed by Joshua Seftel and produced by Conall Jones, journalist Steve Hartman and photographer Lou Bopp document the empty bedrooms of children killed in school shootings over the course of seven years.<\/p>\n Gloria Cazares, whose child was killed in the Uvalde school shooting, accepted the award.<\/p>\n \u201cMy daughter, Jackie, was nine years old when she was killed in Uvalde. Since that day, her bedroom has been frozen in time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Film Editing<\/b><\/p>\n Best International Feature Film<\/b><\/p>\n Best Live Action Short Film<\/b><\/p>\n \u201cThank you to the Academy for supporting a movie that is weird, that is queer, and made by a majority of women!\u201d said Natalie Musteata of \u201cTwo People Exchanging Saliva.\u201d<\/p>\n Director Sam A. Davis of \u201cSingers\u201d called his short a \u201csimple story about the power of music and art to bring us together in a moment when we live in an increasingly isolated world.\u201d<\/p>\n Yes, there was a tie and it’s not the first time this has happened at the Oscars.\u00a0<\/p>\n The most recent tie came during the 2013 Oscars honoring films from 2012, when \u201cZero Dark Thirty\u201d and \u201cSkyfall\u201d tied for the sound editing category. There have been five other ties in Oscars history, making Sunday\u2019s tie the seventh.<\/p>\n The first tie, which was at the 5th Academy Awards almost 100 years ago, was based on an old rule. Wallace Beery (\u201cThe Champ\u201d) and Fredric March (\u201cDr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde\u201d) tied for best actor. They came within exactly one vote of each other, and in accordance with Academy rules at the time, they shared the recognition. That rule has since changed and only an exact match in totals would qualify as a tie today, according to the Academy.<\/p>\n Makeup and Hairstyling<\/b><\/p>\n “While we\u2019re making this film, we had the sense we\u2019re part of something very special, and tonight confirms that,\u201d makeup artist Mike Hill said as he accepted his Oscar.<\/p>\n Original Score<\/b><\/p>\n Original Song<\/b><\/p>\n Production Design<\/b><\/p>\n Sound<\/b><\/p>\n Visual Effects<\/b><\/p>\n Adapted Screenplay<\/b><\/p>\n \u201cI wrote this movie for my kids to say sorry for the housekeeping mess that we left in this world we\u2019re handing off to them,\u201d Anderson said as he accepted his Oscar.<\/p>\n “This is an adaptation, so I owe a huge debt of admiration and love to Thomas Pynchon. Any writer knows that…you either beg for forgiveness, or your special thanks is really to your family and the people that you share a roof with, who put up with what it means to live with a writer,” he added.<\/p>\n Original Screenplay<\/b><\/p>\n During his speech, he asked the \u201cSinners\u201d cast and crew to stand up. \u201cYou\u2019re all winners in my book,\u201d he said. “I want to thank the Academy for thinking of our movie that came out almost a year ago. This is an incredible honor. I want to thank my fellow nominees.”<\/p>\n It has been another great year in filmmaking, and the only thing tighter than some of the Oscar races this year has been security for the 98th Academy Awards.<\/p>\n The unusually heavy security has been ramped up amid the ongoing Middle East war and concerns about retaliatory strikes by Iran. There have been no specific threats against the Oscars on Sunday, and last week, Gov.
