\n\tWhile presenting the Oscar for best international film, Javier Bardem<\/a> started his time at the podium by saying \u201cNo to war and free Palestine,\u201d which earned a big round of applause from the audience at the March 15 awards show.<\/p>\n

\n\tBardem also sported a \u201cNo to war\u201d pin and one supporting Palestine on his tuxedo lapel.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe moment follows national backlash over recent American military strikes against Iran<\/a>, as well as prolonged United States intervention in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn the red carpet of the Emmy awards this season, Bardem spoke to Variety<\/a> about his passion surrounding the topic.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHere I am today, denouncing the genocide in Gaza,\u201d he said. \u201cI am talking about the IAGS, the International Association of Genocide Scholars, who study thoroughly genocide and has declared it is a genocide. That\u2019s why we ask for a commercial and diplomatic blockade and also sanctions on Israel to stop the genocide. Free Palestine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn February, Bardem was one of over 100 celebrity signatories to an open letter<\/a> criticizing the Berlin Film Festival for \u201csilence\u201d on Gaza.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe write as film workers, all of us past and current Berlinale participants, who expect the institutions in our industry to refuse complicity in the terrible violence that continues to be waged against Palestinians,\u201d the letter reads. \u201cWe are dismayed at the Berlinale\u2019s involvement in censoring artists who oppose Israel\u2019s ongoing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and the German state\u2019s key role in enabling it.
