SHANGHAI, March 16 (Reuters) – Alibaba Group CEO Eddie Wu will head its newly formed Alibaba \u200cToken Hub business group, which will focus on \u200cbuilding artificial intelligence work platforms for enterprises, the firm said in \u200ba statement on Monday.<\/p>\n
The new group will comprise existing Alibaba units Tongyi Laboratory, MaaS Business Line, Qwen, Wukong, and AI Innovation.<\/p>\n
“I will lead ATH directly, with \u200ca mandate to \u2060drive strategic coordination across our AI businesses, embed AI deeply into how we work, \u2060and preserve the agility that lets us move fast,” Wu said in a memo to Alibaba staff.<\/p>\n
The latest \u200bmove follows \u200bquestions about its AI \u200bstrategy raised following the \u200cearly March exit of Alibaba’s Qwen AI model division head, Lin Junyang, the third senior Qwen executive to exit this year.<\/p>\n
Chinese firms, most of which offer open-source AI models that are free to download, \u200chave seen token prices drop dramatically \u200bamid intense domestic competition between \u200bleading tech firms.<\/p>\n
Top \u200bmodels like DeepSeek, Qwen and Zhipu’s \u200cChatGLM cost up to 10 \u200bto 20 times \u200bless than U.S. counterparts as Chinese players use cost-effectiveness to shore up global market share, simultaneously \u200braising questions \u200cabout profitability.<\/p>\n
Alibaba is due to report quarterly earnings \u200bon Thursday.<\/p>\n
