LOS ANGELES (AP) \u2014 Sean Penn has built one of the most decorated careers in contemporary acting, and he has added another Oscar to the list.<\/a><\/p>\n

On Sunday, Penn won the Academy Award<\/a> for best supporting actor for his performance in Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s<\/a> political drama \u201cOne Battle After Another.\u201d<\/a> He delivered a commanding portrayal of a seasoned power broker navigating the shifting loyalties and ideological battles at the center of the film.<\/p>\n

Penn, 65, did not attend the Oscars. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe couldn\u2019t be here tonight, or he didn\u2019t want to,\u201d Kieran Culkin said after announcing Penn as the winner.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not the first time Penn has been an Oscars no-show. He\u2019s previously skipped the show three times when he was nominated for \u201cDead Man Walking\u201d in 1996, \u201cSweet and Lowdown\u201d in 2000 and \u201cI Am Sam\u201d in 2002. <\/p>\n

In 2022, Penn gave one of the Oscar statuettes to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Mykola Serha, founder and leader of the Cultural Forces told AP Monday that Penn is in Ukraine. He did not elaborate on the actor\u2019s plans during his visit.<\/p>\n

Cultural Forces is an informal association of Ukrainian servicemen from creative professions formed to support morale and the motivation of military personnel through culture and the arts.<\/p>\n

Penn also bowed out from attending the BAFTAs and Actor Awards this year.<\/p>\n

In the movie, Penn plays a calculating strategist named Col. Steven J. Lockjaw whose decades of experience in political movements give him both influence and scars. His character carries the weight of past victories and failures, offering sharp insights while quietly pulling strings behind the scenes. The performance blends Penn\u2019s trademark intensity with moments of restraint, delivering a standout performance among the film\u2019s talented ensemble.<\/p>\n

The win is Penn\u2019s third Academy Award.<\/p>\n

The actor did attend when he previously won two Academy Awards for best actor for Clint Eastwood\u2019s 2003 crime drama \u201cMystic River\u201d and for portraying San Francisco politician and LGBTQ rights pioneer Harvey Milk in Gus Van Sant\u2019s 2008 biopic \u201cMilk.\u201d<\/p>\n

Penn first gained attention in the 1980s, with films including \u201cFast Times at Ridgemont High,\u201d but quickly established himself as one of Hollywood\u2019s most fearless dramatic actors. Over the decades he has delivered acclaimed performances in films such as \u201cDead Man Walking,\u201d \u201cCarlito\u2019s Way,\u201d \u201cThe Thin Red Line,\u201d and \u201cI Am Sam.\u201d<\/p>\n

His performance in \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d adds another acclaimed role to a career defined by intense and transformative performances.<\/p>\n

Other nominees included cast member Delroy Lindo, Benicio Del Toro, Jacob Elordi and Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd.<\/p>\n
