They don\u2019t pay attention to traffic laws, and you have to just kind of have your head on a swivel,\u201d Brand said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Brand said he has not had a close call personally but has watched other near-misses on the busy shopping strips.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cFor people that just are down here on First Street or First Avenue, whichever you call it, and they\u2019re just walking from store to store, and the local e-bikers, and especially the touristy bikers, just kind of go,\u201d Brand said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Abby Sawyer, a spring break tourist, described a near-miss with a campus e-bike back home and urged riders to pay attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe do have some back at our college, back at home, and I will say I have almost been right over a couple of times. I\u2019m not gonna lie,\u201d Sawyer said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Local officials are reminding beachgoers about safety rules after Atlantic Beach police posted guidance this week about e-bike enforcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Atlantic Beach social media post reiterated several rules for riders: <\/p>\n<ul class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 kDvXdO font_openSans articleList\">\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Motorized bikes are not allowed in parks<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Sidewalk speed is limited to 10 mph<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>Riders under 16 must wear helmets<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__StackBase-sc-1fnzlkn-7 ecGWWE iQviKm\">\n<p>All riders must obey traffic laws<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The post follows reports that e-bike injuries and crashes have climbed in recent months and news that a transportation bill regarding regulations for e-bikes (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2026\/382\/?Tab=BillText\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2026\/382\/?Tab=BillText\">CS\/SB 382<\/a>) passed both the Florida House and Senate and is awaiting Gov. Ron DeSantis\u2019 approval.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Scott Schultz, a Jacksonville resident, said his main worry is for the riders themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI will say with the e-bikes, honestly, I\u2019m more concerned about the safety for the e-bike riders than for the other people,\u201d Schultz said. \u201cThey tend to disregard traffic laws, and operate in places that aren\u2019t designed for them, and that\u2019s why I think they\u2019re the ones that are most at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Sgt. Tonya Tator of the Jacksonville Beach Police Department encouraged safe riding and said e-bike operators must follow the same traffic laws that apply to bicyclists and motorists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe just really encourage parents, as well as the adults out there, to ride those e-bikes responsibly,\u201d Tator said. \u201cThey have to follow the same laws as what bicycles do, which are when you\u2019re particularly in the roadway, you have to follow the same traffic law as a vehicle would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Police across nearby beach communities said they are watching for safety violations.
