When Natasha Pickowicz<\/a> was looking for locations to host a party for her first cookbook, More Than Cake, she zeroed in on Canyon Coffee\u2019s Echo Park caf\u00e9<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cI was running into scores of people I knew that weren\u2019t even there for the book event \u2014 they were just hanging out there because it\u2019s a genuinely relaxing and chill place,\u201d she remembers. \u201cI think Casey and Ally embody this sort of effortless, easygoing coolness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Co-founders Casey Wojtalewicz and Ally Walsh have managed to build a reputation for vibe curation, even though Canyon operates just one caf\u00e9 to complement its national wholesale roasting business. Chappell Roan, Harry Styles, Zo\u00eb Kravitz, and Lorde have all been known to stop in, while neighbors meet \u2014 as in, for the first time \u2014 on line. \u201cWe heard from the neighborhood about how much more they felt connected to their literal neighbors,\u201d Wojtalewicz says. \u201cWe heard people who said, \u2018I never knew my next-door neighbor until you opened here, and now I have dinner with them regularly.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

That response is part of the reason they\u2019re opening the second caf\u00e9, this one in Prospect Heights. (Opening day is scheduled for March 19.) Transplants are already thrilled. \u201cI miss L.A. coffee shops, where you truly go to slow down instead of refueling on caffeine on the go,\u201d says M\u00e9lanie Masarin<\/a>, the founder of the nonalcoholic-cocktail brand Ghia<\/a>, who moved to New York last year. \u201cI enjoyed the 25-minute walk up and down a hill to Canyon for a great cup of coffee and a labneh toast on a thick and delicious piece of bread in a sunny corner.\u201d<\/p>\n

The toast, the vibes, and the coffee are all here in a bright, airy space designed by Klein Agency<\/a> that mimics the wood-and-limestone look of the original. A mural, commissioned by painter John Zabawa, depicts a bowl of citrus and apples as a nod to the bounty of both the East and West Coasts. (Canyon serves fresh-squeezed orange juice in Echo Park; here, it\u2019s apple cider.) The pastries will be supplied by Elbow Bread<\/a> (the bakery\u2019s first-ever wholesale account) and Amanda Perdomo<\/a>. Brooklyn\u2019s Masha Tea<\/a> will offer a special caf\u00e9-only blend. The new caf\u00e9 will also offer Canyon\u2019s original toast and sandwich menu from chef James Wayman.<\/p>\n

For Walsh, who grew up on Long Island, the new caf\u00e9 is something of a homecoming: Her mother grew up in Brooklyn, and her siblings still live here. And because the wholesale business already sells to clients here \u2014 Levain and Simon Kim\u2019s COTE<\/a> are among the East Coast customers \u2014 they\u2019ve found a receptive audience. \u201cI\u2019m beyond elated to welcome them with open arms in Brooklyn,\u201d says the chef, model, and event planner Tara Thomas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe vibes of their Echo Park shop are immaculate. Definitely up there with Zabar\u2019s<\/a> for me in terms of the quality of the beans and the coffee. I am so excited for them to open it\u2019s not even funny,\u201d writes<\/a> one user on the sub-Reddit r\/ProspectHeights. \u201cCanyon blows every coffee shop in Brooklyn out of the water,\u201d declares<\/a> another. Alas, if you enjoy coffee and vibes and don\u2019t live near Vanderbilt Avenue, never fear. A second Los Angeles caf\u00e9 is already months from opening, and more outposts are potentially slated for New York City and beyond.<\/p>\n
