But on Sunday, he acknowledged that he knows \u201ca little bit about that critique.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that Teyana has talked about it a lot,\u201d Anderson remarked, referring to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/creative-content\/movies\/teyana-taylor-one-battle-after-another-perfidia-sexuality\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"previous interviews\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"69b82f1fe4b0e8cdfdd359c7\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/creative-content\/movies\/teyana-taylor-one-battle-after-another-perfidia-sexuality\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">previous interviews<\/a> in which the Best Supporting Actress nominee discussed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.complex.com\/pop-culture\/a\/cmplxtara-mahadevan\/teyana-taylor-one-battle-after-another-black-women-fetishized\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"strong audience reactions\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"69b82f1fe4b0e8cdfdd359c7\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.complex.com\/pop-culture\/a\/cmplxtara-mahadevan\/teyana-taylor-one-battle-after-another-black-women-fetishized\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">strong audience reactions<\/a> to her character.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that we have the portrayal of many different characters \u2014 in particular, her character, who is so flawed and, unfortunately, makes decisions that are detrimental to the revolution that she\u2019s trying to fight,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>While the director didn\u2019t explicitly address the racial politics in his film when asked, he noted that the matter is \u201ccomplicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe always knew that we were trying to make something complicated,\u201d Anderson said. \u201cWe knew that we weren\u2019t making something that was heroic, and we needed to lean into that. And we needed to own the fact that this woman was suffering not only from postpartum depression, but she had issues of her own that she hadn\u2019t really reconciled with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As far as Perfidia\u2019s antihero trajectory, which has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2026\/mar\/11\/why-black-women-playing-villains-on-screen-still-feels-controversial\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"mildly criticized compared to other aspects\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"69b82f1fe4b0e8cdfdd359c7\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2026\/mar\/11\/why-black-women-playing-villains-on-screen-still-feels-controversial\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">mildly criticized compared to other aspects<\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2026\/mar\/11\/why-black-women-playing-villains-on-screen-still-feels-controversial\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"69b82f1fe4b0e8cdfdd359c7\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2026\/mar\/11\/why-black-women-playing-villains-on-screen-still-feels-controversial\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><\/strong>, Anderson explained how it can be \u201ca very dangerous thing\u201d when someone like her revolutionary character starts out wanting to change the world, \u201cbut you start to kind of become selfish and you read your own reviews.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe point of it is to set up a story of Willa, the next generation,\u201d he added, referencing Perfidia\u2019s daughter, who is played by newcomer Chase Infiniti. \u201cWhat happens when your parents, who are damaged and have handed quite a difficult history to you, how do you manage that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s our story,\u201d Anderson concluded, \u201cand our story is in Chase and her evolution, in terms of the generational aspect. To try to do better.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Anderson\u2019s response follows months of <a href=\"https:\/\/decider.com\/2026\/03\/10\/oscars-2026-sinners-vs-one-battle-after-another\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"intense debate\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"69b82f1fe4b0e8cdfdd359c7\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/decider.com\/2026\/03\/10\/oscars-2026-sinners-vs-one-battle-after-another\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">intense debate<\/a> surrounding \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d which has continued even after the film\u2019s big Oscar wins.<\/p>\n<p>When the movie first premiered, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/one-battle-after-another-review_n_68f92b65e4b0f9da0b2c900c\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"I wrote\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"69b82f1fe4b0e8cdfdd359c7\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"68f92b65e4b0f9da0b2c900c\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">I wrote<\/a> that while the politically charged action-dramedy is undeniably entertaining, its racial dynamics at times weaken the storytelling, particularly in areas that could have benefited from deeper exploration. That includes Perfidia\u2019s struggles with motherhood and postpartum depression, which, to some viewers, felt overshadowed by scenes that frame her through sexual objectification.<\/p>\n<p>And with little clarification from Anderson himself \u2014 who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-independent.com\/arts-entertainment\/films\/news\/paul-thomas-anderson-politics-baftas-b2925611.html\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"sidestepped\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"69b82f1fe4b0e8cdfdd359c7\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.the-independent.com\/arts-entertainment\/films\/news\/paul-thomas-anderson-politics-baftas-b2925611.html\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sidestepped<\/a> questions about race and politics in his film throughout the entire awards season \u2014 it seems audiences will continue to stew over these contentious aspects of the movie whenever the discussion resurfaces.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in his post-Oscars interview, Anderson tried to dodge a question over how his Oscar-winning film reflects the current times and where we\u2019re headed \u2014 \u201cI thought we were supposed to be partying,\u201d he joked \u2014 before acknowledging how \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d ultimately parallels \u201cwhat\u2019s happening in the news every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt obviously reflects what\u2019s happening in the world,\u201d he added. \u201cIn terms of where it\u2019s going, I don\u2019t know, but I know that the end of our movie is our hero, Willa, heading off to continue to fight against evil forces.
