Between clips that supposedly show the Israeli prime minister sporting extra fingers and drinking from a bottomless, gravity-defying cup of coffee, only one thing is apparent: Reality used to be much easier to prove.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">There\u2019s very little credible evidence to suggest that Netanyahu isn\u2019t alive. But credibility is a rare commodity now that AI can convincingly clone real people across image, video, and audio formats, so it\u2019s getting tougher to conclusively dispel the rumors. This is what it looks like when nobody can trust their own eyes anymore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The conspiracy theories started following a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/sReth7o1lN0?t=59s\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">press conference livestream<\/a> hosted by Netanyahu on Friday. A clip of the broadcast was widely shared by social media users who claim the footage briefly shows the Israeli PM with six fingers on his right hand. Older generative AI tools have a history of struggling with hands, so the apparent extra appendage pushed speculation that Israel is using deepfake footage to hide that Netanyahu had died during an Iranian missile strike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">On closer inspection, the \u201cextra\u201d finger can be easily explained by video quality degradation and even lighting. Fact-checkers including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/fact-check\/netanyahu-6-fingers-ai\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Snopes<\/a> and the Poynter Institute\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2026\/mar\/13\/social-media\/netanyahu-dead-video-artificial-intelligence\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PolitiFact<\/a> have debunked claims that the video was AI-generated. We should also consider the runtime of the video itself, which, at almost 40 minutes, is far longer than the maximum clip lengths that can be generated by current AI video models.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">In an attempt to put the AI clone conspiracies to rest, Netanyahu published a video to his X account yesterday showing him inside a coffee shop, and asking the person behind the camera to count his fingers. Image: @netanyahu<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Some of these comments have merit, pointing to moments within the video that show liquid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@phiriim0506\/post\/DV6odPfDOPj?xmt=AQF0FiUEKW1fyFXIgfeLZdNz3kqXOkjBTG_AO9CTVy1iBDyE4dnS_kSKrrzbf2KrKGaZnhk&amp;slof=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moving unnaturally<\/a> (or not depleting) within the coffee cup in Netanyahu\u2019s hand, and the ring on his finger seemingly vanishing in and out of the skin that surrounds it, though that could also be explained by video degradation. The background environment itself has also been called into question \u2014 the till on the counter appears to be displaying a date from 2024, for example. Others have denounced the video as fake over claims that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@ayazj_amali\/post\/DV7TUFECAVZ?xmt=AQF0nxe_wybbl6n3uS2HBtBa4_H8VSeLEYCzMBmlVfCMvYxfcHG0PCTM5R8R0Zx8Mfjx_VI&amp;slof=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Netanyahu is left-handed<\/a>, but is seen drinking the beverage with his right hand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">If you read the comments on some of these speculative posts, the reasons that people are giving to be suspicious of fakery in these videos get increasingly bizarre, questioning how naturally Netanyahu is holding the cup and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@jovankaorleanka333\/post\/DV64RtfkyT-?xmt=AQF0FiUEKW1fyFXIgfeLZdNz3kqXOkjBTG_AO9CTVy1iBDyE4dnS_kSKrrzbf2KrKGaZnhk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">general \u201caura\u201d<\/a> he gives off. None of it actually matters, though, because it\u2019s almost impossible to definitively prove whether either of these videos is genuinely authentic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Neither of the clips carries metadata from a system like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/8\/21\/24223932\/c2pa-standard-verify-ai-generated-images-content-credentials\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">C2PA Content Credentials<\/a> or SynthID, which could either verify their authenticity or track where and how AI tools were used. Out of the platforms like Instagram and YouTube that pledge to tag AI-generated or manipulated content, none of the clips they hosted gave any indication that the footage was fake, verified as authentic, or otherwise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">People want assurances that what they\u2019re seeing is real, especially with the ongoing conflict between Iran, Israel, and the US. Our online landscape isn\u2019t currently equipped to facilitate that, forcing us to constantly adapt by learning how professional fact checkers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/888303\/photo-video-fake-news-verification-nyt-bellingway\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">debunking synthetic or misleading media<\/a>, or trusting others to tell us when something is fake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Even before AI became rampant, people were occasionally paranoid about it being used to manipulate news \u2014 like the viral <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/3\/12\/24098548\/kate-middleton-royal-family-photoshop-manipulated-image\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kate Middleton proof-of-life photoshoot<\/a> that turned out to be a botched edit \u2014 and now, of course, it\u2019s much worse. AI tools are now capable of generating content with fewer of the usual \u201ctells,\u201d and it\u2019s becoming harder to say with absolute certainty if a photo or video of something actually happened. In turn, that\u2019s creating a crisis of trust even when people have no clear evidence of manipulation \u2014 as in the original Netanyahu video.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">That uncertainty is already being used to spark distrust on all sides of this war. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116235861005528220\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Truth Social post on Sunday<\/a>, President Donald Trump accused Iran of using AI as a \u201cdisinformation weapon\u201d to falsely depict successful attacks against the US, and called for media outlets that generated it to be charged with treason \u201cfor the dissemination of false information.\u201d It\u2019s true that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/fake-ai-content-about-the-iran-war-is-all-over-x\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI-generated disinformation is rife<\/a>, but this is coming from the same man who has personally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/8\/19\/24223589\/trump-ai-generated-swift-harris-social-media\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">used deepfakes<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poynter.org\/fact-checking\/2025\/trump-white-house-ai-political-messaging\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cause his own<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/1825138139502878806\" rel=\"nofollow\">political mayhem<\/a>, and leads the US administration that spends more time sharing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/column\/861476\/trump-memes-venezuela-ice-shooting\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI-generated edgelord memes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/22\/us\/politics\/nekima-armstrong-photo-white-house.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">manipulative disinformation<\/a> to social media than actual policy bulletins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">And yet Trump still had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/media-telecom\/trump-accuses-iran-using-ai-spread-disinformation-2026-03-16\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the audacity to tell reporters<\/a> after making that Truth Social post on Sunday that \u201cAI can be very \u200bdangerous,\u201d and that \u201cwe have to be very careful with it.\u201d Perhaps the Trump administration could start by leading by example.
