{"id":661996,"date":"2026-03-17T12:25:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-17T12:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/661996\/"},"modified":"2026-03-17T12:25:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T12:25:11","slug":"elderly-couple-lose-dream-hawaii-home-after-it-was-destroyed-by-floods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/661996\/","title":{"rendered":"Elderly couple lose dream Hawaii home after it was destroyed by floods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An elderly couple lost their dream Hawaii home after it was destroyed by raging floods.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tom and Carrie Bashaw, 80, were powerless to stop the devastation caused by the Kona storm, a winter cyclone that saw Maui pummelled with more than 20 inches of rain over five days last week. <\/p>\n<p>The storm whipped up the Iao Stream into a river, which then eroded the foundations of their Happy Valley home, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiinewsnow.com\/2026\/03\/16\/everythings-gone-maui-couple-needs-help-after-raging-river-rips-through-home\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported by Hawaii News Now.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tom and Carrie Bashaw lost their dream Maui home after it was destroyed in raging floods.  Laycie Khadija \/ Facebook<\/p>\n<p>The couple was left blindsided as they didn\u2019t think their home, located 75 feet away from the stream and 45 feet above it, was going to flood.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Compounding their woes, they didn\u2019t have any flood insurance as their home wasn\u2019t in a designated flood zone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever expected my whole house to disappear,\u201d Carrie told Hawaii News Now. \u201cEverything\u2019s gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The flooding devastated their home \u2014 less than six years after it was built \u2014 and the couple\u2019s living room and bedroom was swept away. <\/p>\n<p>Tom said the floods had taken \u201cthe whole back half of the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The couple\u2019s home falling into the river. Laycie Khadija \/ Facebook<\/p>\n<p>Tom and Carrie had been watching the forecast since Friday and started to plot their escape when they lost their mango and monkey pod.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They sought shelter in a barn that night before surveying the damage the following morning.<\/p>\n<p>Tom heard a cracking sound while inspecting the state of his home \u2014 just before the garage collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>Tom and Carrie have been left sleeping on air mattresses inside a storage container.
