Prestonwood Christian\u2019s Xavier Mitchell<\/a> was sitting in his living room with his family, just faintly listening to the 2025 MLB draft<\/a> broadcasts in the background.<\/p>\n

Then, while talking to Kisha Mitchell-Thompson, his mother, and other family members when he heard his phone ringing. <\/p>\n

It was his agent.<\/p>\n

The agent called to tell the left-handed pitcher that the Los Angeles Angels selected him with the 379th overall pick in the 13th round of the MLB draft Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was doubt, but I kept my faith in God and I just had to wait patiently,\u201d Mitchell said. \u201cAnd when I got that call and the general manager was like, \u2018We really want you and we\u2019re gonna give you everything we got.\u2019 I just had to take the offer and get the opportunity, so I\u2019m very thankful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mitchell, a Texas <\/a>signee, told The Dallas Morning News<\/a> that the deal with the Angels is not finalized. The 6-3 pitcher will choose between the Longhorns and the Angels.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very grateful and still don\u2019t think it\u2019s real,\u201d He said. \u201cBut once I regulate my emotions later on, it\u2019s gonna hit me hard.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mitchell is rated the No. 168 prospect<\/a>, according to MLB Pipeline. He had to be shut down last season due to an injury, but in the 2024 season, but posted a 1.32 ERA and 9-0 pitching record during his junior season. Had 97 strikeouts in 53 innings pitched and was first-team all-state. Mitchell was also on the Team USA U18 baseball team last summer and participated in the MLB combine.<\/p>\n

James Vilade, Mitchell\u2019s coach at Prestonwood Christian for three seasons, said he was proud to see his former player drafted.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the goals along the way is getting drafted, and it\u2019s an exciting time,\u201d Vilade said. \u201cIt\u2019s a new journey, and he\u2019s shown the ability to be a draft pick. He\u2019s been a great amateur pitcher, and now he\u2019s gonna have a chance to go be a professional pitcher.\u201d<\/p>\n
