PHOENIX (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 A 2-year-old boy is recovering after he was found unconscious in a backyard pool<\/a>, and Phoenix fire officials say his mother\u2019s CPR efforts made a critical difference.<\/p>\n

First responders were called to a home near 15th and Glendale avenues<\/a> just before 7 p.m. Monday. When crews arrived, the boy\u2019s mother was already performing CPR on the child.<\/p>\n

Phoenix Fire Captain Todd Keller said the mother\u2019s actions were pivotal.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we move into warmer weather the first thing I want to talk about is how imperative CPR is. It probably saved this child\u2019s life or is going to make a difference,\u201d Keller said.<\/p>\n

Jay Arthur, president of the National Drowning Prevention Coalition, echoed that message.<\/p>\n

\u201cCPR is the best thing we can provide for a child that is a drowning victim,\u201d Arthur said.<\/p>\n

Layers of prevention<\/p>\n

Arthur said rising temperatures mean parents should increase their vigilance. He outlined several recommended safety measures, including CPR training, pool fences, and door alarms that sound when back doors are opened.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very irritating and it\u2019s supposed to be,\u201d Arthur said of the door alarms.<\/p>\n

Swim lessons are also among the prevention layers Arthur recommends.<\/p>\n

Phoenix mother Maggie Powers said she has enrolled all of her children in Hubbard Family Swim School at a young age, including her newest child, Roger.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll get him starting at 8 weeks,\u201d Powers said. \u201cAnything that we can do to prevent that and make our kids safer, we\u2019re willing to do,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in Arizona. Arthur said the risk is also preventable and called on parents to act before an emergency occurs.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery life\u2019s important, every child\u2019s important, and we want to make sure that doesn\u2019t happen to anybody,\u201d Arthur said.<\/p>\n

Phoenix Children\u2019s Hospital offers free CPR classes in English and Spanish for parents with children ages 1 to 5, the highest-risk age group for drownings.<\/p>\n
